"1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Pace Car
The Indianapolis 500 auto race has used a pace car every year since 1911. The pace car is utilized for two primary purposes, at the start of the race, the pace car leads the assembled starting grid around the track for a predetermined number of un-scored warm-up laps. Then, if the officials deem appropriate, it releases the field at a purposeful speed to start the race. In addition, during yellow flag caution periods, the pace car enters the track and picks up the leader, bunching the field up at a reduced speed. Prior to the first ""500"" in 1911, in the interest of safety, Indianapolis Motor Speedway founder Carl G. Fisher is commonly credited with the concept of a ""rolling start"" led by a pace car. Nearly all races at the time, as well as all Formula One races even to the present, utilize a standing start.
For your potential purchase and enjoyment, Classic Auto Mall brings you an Indianapolis Pace Car Edition Camaro from 1993. With its ribbonlike colored graphics to its two-tone black over white and computer stitched interior pattern this car takes badging to a new level. All Indy graphics, all great shape, and all Z28! With a single owner, fastidious, bordering on fanatical care, this Pace Car Z was purchased new by our consignor, the general manager of a Chevrolet dealership, collected everything and anything he could related to the Z28 Pace Car Edition. From the 6 sets of NOS decals, posters, brochures, models and an autobiography of the car, he has it all. Window sticker, check...build sheet, check...invoice, check...bill of sale, check...you name it, this 31 actual mile example has it. It's one of the 633, or 653 units built, and while not a track or festival car, our consignor did trailer it to the Brickyard for the pace car reunion, even taking 2 laps around the fabled track. Oh, before I forget, this car comes with a pace car jacket, golf shirt, 4 t-shirts, and a slew of other collectibles as well as being a division winner at the Camaro Nationals in 1995. A showroom new 30 year old car, that was actually on display in its selling dealership from new until 2004 when the store was sold...talk about an impressive history.
Exterior
Like a Tuxedo that attended a party, we have black to the 3/4 waterline, then white on the lower quarter. Beautiful unmarred ribbonlike colored pinstriping rides the wind and whips from front to back of this car on either side. A speeding Official Pace Car graphic is on the door panel, and special badging of the wing and wheel Speedway logo since its inception grace the panels as well. Fantastic white 16-inch wheels with the factory installed tires are noted on all 4 corners and carry the white all the way around through the lower quarter of the car. The hatchback has a small spoiler attached to the rear of it. Removable ""T"" tops are noted on the roof. With its rakish overall design, this car was clearly penned to slice through the air like a hot knife through butter, but don't go and get any ideas...the 31 miles are special, so testing that theory must be done at your own, and your wallet's risk.
Interior
Not unlike the exterior, we see cloth seats that have a white to black confetti fade, and an overlay of more colorful ribbon still wrapped in their factory plastic. Of interesting note, this upholstery was created using a special 3D knitting method. Front buckets and a rear 2 plus 2, (sans colorful ribbons), make up the passenger compartment. These present as showroom new and are still wearing the assembly line applied plastic covers. No dealership prep was done on this car, it's just the way it left the St. Therese assembly plant. A crack free dash houses all the essentials including a slew of gauges, the heater and AC dials, and the factory AM/FM/CD stereo. Charcoal black carpet floods the floors and peering upward gives a tinted view of the sky through the glass roof sections as well as the tight headliner that looks down on all this amazing activity going on in the fabric pattern.
Drivetrain
With a lift of the hood we peer down upon the original 350ci LT1 with aluminum heads, EFI, and 275hp, sitting in an operating room cleanand original engine bay. It is backed by the original 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission and 10 bolt 3.23 Positraction rear. Plenty of power, plenty of originality and plenty of WOW factors here. So original that our consignor even has the original battery that came with the car.
Undercarriage
Framing the original exhaust system, we note very light surface rust on nonstructural parts, all as expected from a 31 mile car. Floor pans and rockers, toe kicks and lower door panels are all rust free. Independent coil springs for the front, and a torque arm and coil springs are for the rear suspension. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
While it's usually a foot race to see who gets behind the wheel of a new consignment comes through our doors, we hesitate to drive the uber low mile examples. This Pace Car, while fully checked for functionality, was not driven, as we didnt want to be the ones to add a single mile to the odometer. That being the case, I'm happy to report all functions worked as they should, and the mighty LT1 mill fired right up with a twist of the key. Showroom new and factory fresh here!
With full intention of buying this car, then putting it right into storage, it has now been time capsuled out, and brought back for the world to behold. A mere 31 miles, seats with plastic bags, a showroom engine, tons of documentation, and nearly every accessory one could want and then some. All in excellent condition and not even a full 1 mile per year! Gentlemen start your engines, and reach for your wallet...
