Ford firmly led the light-truck market for more than 10 years by 1990. This example is finished in the top-of-the-line XLT Lariat. A local gentleman has consigned this truck to us showing only 52,927 on the odometer, extra clean truck all around.
Made in Ford's Michigan Avenue factory in Wayne, Michigan in March 1990, this example was shipped to the St. Louis sales zone, (code DSO 55) and it remained there during its ownership.
Finished in Medium Scarlet (code EN) with a Pawnee Tan (code AV) inset, the truck's paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body, the engine bay is very tidy, the eight-foot cargo bed looks great, as does the bed cap. The cab and the camper shell both have sliding windows. The truck's body is straight and solid.
This F-150 rides on Goodyear Wrangler APT tires, size 235/75R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a factory alloy wheel. The tires and wheels are all in very good order. The truck rides a 133-inch wheelbase and has a 5,450 GVWR.
This truck has a somewhat unusual choice of motivation, Ford's 4.9L inline six-cylinder engine (VIN code Y), not a V-8. The engine features electronic fuel injection. The motor is married to an E4OD four-speed automatic transmission (code E) and a 3.08:1 rear end (code 18).
Inside, the car has a Scarlet cloth interior. The full bench seat looks great, as do the matching carpet and headliner. A two-spoke steering wheel faces the driver. The dashboard, with its full array of gauges and the inner door panels, are all in great shape. A column-mounted shifter and a factory AM/FM stereo round out the interior. Truck rear gas tank gauge is inop.
The truck's trim breakdown in 1990 was as follows: Custom, which included vinyl upholstery, a black steering wheel, a chrome front bumper, black grille, hubcaps, foldaway sideview mirrors and an electronic AM radio with digital clock and two speakers.
The next level up was XL, which replaced the vinyl bench seat with cloth and vinyl upholstery, the fold-away sideview mirror became swing-away mirrors, the front bumper gained a rub strip, the interior had color-keyed floor mats, a door trim panel with map pocket and a color-keyed headliner.
Topping the range is the XLT Lariat, with this truck 15, replaced the cloth-and-vinyl bench seat with one of all cloth upholstery, added a chrome grille, sport wheel covers, tinted glass, carpeting and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The exterior was facelifted with new composite headlamps, a more aerodynamic front end, and circular fenders. Inside, the interior was given a complete redesign. Rear antilock brakes were now standard, the first pickup truck to boast this.
Competition this F-150 in 1990 included Chevrolet's C1500 Silverado, Dodge's Power Ram, GMC's Sierra 1500, Mitsubishi's Mighty Max, Nissan's Hardbody and Toyota's Hilux.
If you're a Ford fan or you're looking for a survivor truck, you owe it to yourself to check out this F-150 from almost 35 years ago. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to schedule a test drive.
