"Mercedes Benz fine-tuned this next generation S-class with 6 years of development to provide an improved ride, better handling, reduced emissions, and increased fuel efficiency which was key for imports to the United States especially at this time in history. They reduced the weight with high strength low alloy steel and made it more aerodynamic, lighter alloy material was also used for the v8 engines. This S-class generation spanned from 1979 to 1991 and featured a standard wheelbase and a longer wheelbase like the example shown here. A revised edition came out for the 1986 and later model years that included styling changes along with mechanical and safety upgrades including ABS braking as standard equipment. Even in the late 1980's, Mercedes Benz kept their vehicles loaded with top-of-the-line comfort and convenience options while also offering a variety of engines sizes to choose from.
We are excited to offer this 1989 Mercedes Benz 420SEL finished in Black exterior paint with chrome exterior trim and a Black leather interior. Powering this S-class Mercedes is a strong 4.2L V8 engine that produces 224 horsepower and is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Loaded with options, this beautiful Mercedes features automatic climate-controlled air conditioning, power steering, power windows & locks, power sunroof, power adjustable seating, cruise control, Alpine AM/FM cassette radio, rear dash compartments with first aid kit, spare tire & tools in the trunk, and 15"" alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Defender tires measuring 205/65R15.
Showing 76,734 miles on the odometer, our example was first titled in Illinois and later passed down in the same family staying garaged in the Lake Forrest, Illinois area until it was sold in 2021. This last owner has continued to care for this vehicle and has only driven it very sparingly while also putting a few thousand dollars into some as-needed repair work. In 2022, new tires were installed, and the air conditioning system was retrofitted to accept the current 134a refrigerant along with replacing the compressor, receiver dryer, and drive belt of the air conditioning system. The twin fuel pumps were replaced along with the fuel filter screen; catalytic converter, resonator, & muffler with fresh exhaust pipe gaskets; driver power seat module; sunroof motor & cable; and all drive belts for the power steering, alternator, and air pump.
This is a beautiful well-kept example of the luxury Mercedes Benz had to offer. Comes complete with the owner's manual, clean CarFax report, extra keys, and receipts of previous repairs. We are positive you will be very impressed with how this car presents itself, and proud to be its next owner! It will forever remain a valuable classic Mercedes design and distinguished luxury collectible!
