"1985 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet
For 1985, Volkswagen changed the name of its Rabbit-based convertible in the United States from Rabbit Convertible to Cabriolet. One reason for the Cabriolet rename was likely its base price-at $11,595, (about $28,400 in today's dollars), around 66% higher than the Golf hatchback coupe's base price. Another driver was that the Cabriolet retained the Mk1 Rabbit as its basis, instead of joining the Mk2 hatchback coupes and sedans, new for 1985 in the United States. All Cabriolets were built by Karmann Coachworks, with most components supplied by Volkswagen-and all had a Karmann badge placed forward of both doors.
For consignment, look for the dancing crazy air noodle at Classic Auto Mall, where you'll see an example of a very well kept and sparinglyused 1985 VW Cabriolet. VW touted in its ads of the day it is the ""most efficient way to go from place to place with the wind in your hair."" Utilitarian with a convertible twist.
Exterior
Square and rectangle design abounds and it's all bathed in Red save for the new convertible canvas top which is black. Some additional black accenting is in with moldings, rubber bumper accents, a horizontal black grille with a shiny VW badge in the center, and round single headlights on the edges of each front quarter. A bit of surface rust bubbling can be seen on the driver's wheel well, and a scratch is on the driver's side rear of the car. With the top down a roll bar exposes itself and since the top is padded not unlike VW tops, there is no tonneau covering. On the back, more square and rectangle design with tail lighting and another rubber accented simple bumper. 14-inch snowflake-esque wheels are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Gray broadcloth bucket and a rear bench reside in the cabin. These chairs use black vinyl bolsters and accenting. The driver's bucket is experiencing some wear through the fabric on the entry bolster. Black carpeting floods the floors, and there are some exciting red accented floor mats in rubber protecting the carpeting. More squares and rectangles for the dash instruments and radio, temp sliders and vents below. On the center console, which is in black is the shifter and a trio of gauges in the lower center just above the beginnings of the console. Overall the interior presents as very clean and save for the drivers seat wear, all is looking just swimmingly for this former hare.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is an unrestored engine bay containing a gaggle of wiring and hoses and underneath all this menagerie of mechanicals is the heart of the machine being a 1.8 L I-4 popper. It sports EFI and a 5 speed manual tranny to turn the front tires. Our consignor states that new injectors have recently been installed and a tune up was performed.
Undercarriage
A slight patina, very light surface rust, but all buttoned up on the structural integrity front. In typical German style, the floor pans and plates virtually cover everything underneath for a more aero efficient environment. An independent suspension with Macpherson struts and power disc brakes is up front, meanwhile a torsion beam and coil spring suspension with power drum brakes brings up the rear. Keeping the whoahfactor in check are fully redone brakes for the front and rear.
Drive-Ability
...And she'll have fun fun fun until her daddy takes the Cabby away! And I did with smooth acceleration although not breakneck in any way, but it's a VW Cabby! All was working save for the radio, but it was an enjoyable experience.
Red, Utilitarian, Convertible Excitement in 4 cylinder economy bliss. Come down, drop the top, let the clutch fly and relive 1985 all over again Muffy!
