"1985 Dodge D150 4x4 Long Bed Pickup
When you think of prospectors, you think of men in the west with beards, hats, and pickaxes. And they were tough and knew how to navigate the land. They would carry things with them and often had mules to carry the rest. Rugged, agile, and determined. This is the spirit Dodge tried to instill in the Prospector package for their Dodge trucks in the 80's.
For consignment, a 1985 Dodge D150 wearing Prospector badges with pickaxe and shovel. This is one tough truck that's been well loved, lifted, and maintained in good running order. Whether you're looking to restore an 80's truck or looking for a work truck to haul some stuff, this big ol' Dodge might just do the trick!
Exterior
Something about the proportions of Dodge trucks of this era that make the fronts look like ""go-anywhere, out-of-my-way, step aside, I've got work to do!"". It's a serious face with a big grille and substantial bumper, but maybe it's that intimidating Ram hood ornament that says it all. Either way, the front of the truck is in good shape made even bigger looking by the lifted suspension and big tires. The truck is painted in two distinct shades of white and the brighter of the two is in random geometric patterns that render the truck one of a kind! This paint is also covering body repairs down the sides of the rig. The roofline is split between the two whites with noticeable crackling in the forward paint which leads into an overabundance of hand applied sealer along the top edge of the glass. The rear window has a sliding window for air circulation and bed access. The long bed has a rubber mat but shows some rust in the edges including holes on the side walls. The tailgate is in good condition on the outer surface and the utility bumper shows some wear, rust, and paint chips. We notice other areas of rust on the body. 15-inch Pro Comp wheels are wrapped in meaty 33x12.5R15LT all terrain tires.
Interior
Red plastic door cards are gussied up with a wood applique and carpeted bottom. The split bench seats are red vinyl and cloth, and the cut pile carpet is in pretty good condition and also red. A three spoke wood steering wheel shares the steering column with an aftermarket Sunpro tachometer and column shifter. The speedometer is recessed in a gauge cluster that is surrounded by wood applique backing. The climate control panel sits near the center of the dash along with an aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette radio. The right side of the dash, in front of the passenger, is in excellent condition. The floor mounted transfer case shifter is a chrome rod with a simple knob as a topper. Thered broadcloth headliner shows with a few sagging areas around the edges, but thankfully with no tears.
Drivetrain
A 318ci V8, Mopar's venerable small block, powers this truck with a single, 4-barrel carburetor attached to an Edelbrock intake manifold. An A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission is original to the truck and another venerable Dodge product. The front differential is a Dana 44 with 3.21 gears while the rear is a 9.25 inch rear also with 3.21's. Power brakes, front disc and rear drums, slow those big tires down. Visually, the engine bay is pure original unrestored, full patina. Unlike modern bays however, there's lots of accessibility and components are easy to get to, with a ladder. We note headers in place of exhaust manifolds.
Undercarriage
This truck has been around the block a few times. And possibly the fields. And maybe even the creek! Quite a bit of surface rust and invasive rust under here, especially in body and bed parts. The frame itself looks okay, but suspension and brake components have what we call advanced surface rust with a good amount of pitting. The exhaust is intact and goes through Raptor mufflers before exiting into the atmosphere via tailpipes behind both rear wheels, but is sans catalytic converters. There's a 4"" Rough Country lift and N20 shocks along with rebuilt front suspension.
Drive-Ability
Good thing I'm limber because the truck is lacking step ups, but on the horse I go! Hey, the air is thinner up here! A pump of the gas, a turn of the key, and the Ram kicked into action. This is not an overly heavy truck so the 318 cubes feels plenty strong enough as we accelerate and allow the automatic transmission to do its thing. The long bed trails behind us and we bring it back into the garage. As we do, we note some non functional items: the horn, the radio, (powers up but reads off), and the rear brakes hang up for a bit.
If you're looking for a Dodge product that rivals Highboys and Hilux's, take a look at this D150. This 4x4 has plenty of patina and plenty of potential for probable prospectors looking for a work truck that's ready right now, or as a palette for a project. Step up and check this truck out.
