"Any roadgoing street version of Enzo Ferrari's mid-engine, flat-12 racecars have always been an obsession for collectors to own and enjoy. These became available for the first time with the Berlinetta Boxer, or BB, introduced in 1973 as the 365 GT4 BB. It would replace the front engine, 12-cylinder powered Ferrari 365 Daytona. Not to be mistaken by the mid-engine layout of the Dino V6-powered cars, the Berlinetta Boxer was the first mid-engine, 12-cylinder road car to wear Ferrari's Prancing Horse badge on the hood. It would progress to a larger displacement 12-cylinder in 1976 newly renamed as the 512BB, and ultimately the 512BBi from 1981 through the end of production in 1984. This final Flat-12 iteration, Tipo F110A, engine would be equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and Magnetti Marelli Dinoplex electronic ignition for optimum performance. Only 1,007 512BBi examples would be produced worldwide during those 4 short years, when production shifted to the more mass-produced Testarossa that would replace it.
We are proud to offer this 1983 Ferrari 512BBi finished in factory code correct Rosso Corsa over original Tan Leather Daytona seats with red leather accents. Powered by its original 4.9L Tipo F110A Flat-12 engine rated at 340hp/335 lb. ft. of torque mated with a 5-speed gate-shifted manual transmission. This incredibly well documented example shows 38,529 miles on the odometer, with known ownership and service history dating back to mid-1990's. Factory appointments include air conditioning; Pioneer/Ferrari branded sound system with AM/FM/Cassette head unit, 4 speakers, and equalizer; power windows, 15"" cast aluminum wheels wrapped in correct Michelin TRX Radial X tires measuring 240/55VR15 at all four corners, front & rear fog lamps, and Veglia Borletti instrumentation.
Our example comes from former ownership of 12 years, who added approximately 3,300 miles to the odometer during his care. It had just received a full, comprehensive major timing belt service at the time of his original purchase in March 2012 completed by Ferrari of Central New Jersey at 35,193 miles. According to consistent service records included with the sale, previous timing belt major services were also completed in 2005 and 1995, both by Ferrari of Washington D.C. Upon arrival to the St. Louis Car Museum, we elected to perform a fresh timing belt service in lieu of the time that had pasted since its last completion. Photo documentation is shown in the gallery and receipts of this service will be provided to the next owner.
In addition to new timing belts, cam belt pulleys, tensioner bearings, cam seals, cam cover gaskets, accessory drive belts, oil seals, oil, air, & fuel filters, exhaust gaskets, etc. that are included in the timing kit proved by Ricambi America, our service also included a brand new clutch assembly with professionally machined flywheel, new flywheel studs, valve adjustment, fuel injector O-rings, rebuild of the water pump with fresh seals, NGK spark plugs, installation of all new Koni shock absorbers(6) and control arm bushings into both front and rear suspension components, wheel bearing seals, updated radiator cap, all new DOT 4 brake fluid with new stainless steel brake hoses, renewed all engine fluids & transaxle gear oil, balanced all four wheels and performed a 4-wheel alignment to exacting Ferrari standards. The air conditioning was fully serviced to remain fully operational. Even the battery and wiper blades are new.
Our beautifully kept Ferrari 512BBi has been impeccably looked after, with records to support servicing almost exclusively by Ferrari since new. Also included with sale will be the original owner's manual, small Ferrari tool kit, large tool kit with tire changing equipment, factory spare tire, and past service records. Having just received a near $22,000 service in preparation for sale, we could not be more excited to present it to the next owner. Please feel free to call with questions or to schedule a chance to review this special piece of Ferrari history for your own collection. Thanks as always for looking!
