A wonderfully original survivor, with a big block and almost every option back in the day. The paint is original and has never been repainted, great patina, and the SP color code matches the \\\"Combination\\\" option of the \\\"Regular\\\" and \\\"Deluxe\\\" Ford Tu-Tone colors of Bali Blue & Dark Blue Metallic. All original straight panels with no bondo evident either. The 460, 3spd auto, & Dana rear matches as originally equipped. The truck maintains its original heavy duty Camper Special suspension components and Super Cooling Package. The original radiator cools amazingly well so was certainly maintained. The Ranger XLT “Comfort” bench seat is original, but upholstery is tired. Was definitely to be my first interior project along with the headliner, though lead times for the exact version are months out, outlasted my need to sell it suddenly sadly to say. So I ordered a high quality saddle blanket cover and had it installed professionally. This isn’t one of those cheap ones. The only modifications from stock, are: a carburetor upgrade (still 4bbl), and the exhaust has vintage straight resonators. The 1st or 2nd owner installed a late 90s or early 2000s style face off CD player and aftermarket speakers in the original speaker holes and works well. I removed an old Grant steering wheel and installed an aftermarket vintage style Ford wood wheel. The original steering wheel will be included and is restorable. There is evidence that the dealer installed air conditioning option was removed entirely, including the plastic center vent outlet in the dash. That\\\'s probably the biggest mystery with the truck, but would be easily plumbed with a Vintage Air system if desired.
Powertrain and mechanicals:
The 460 runs very strong with great compression and oil pressure. The previous owner said that the engine had been gone through from the 2nd owner, but I have no proof of that, other than it runs very strong, better than any big block I\\\'ve driven. Starts every time without effort, idles great and cruises at 70mph no problem. Also shifts, steers and stops well.
It is a great driver now, nothing absolutely needed. However here were my planned projects:
- The original exhaust is rusted from the resonators back and has no mufflers currently. But sounds amazing!!
- The rear suspension is well preserved & original but a bit stiff in travel
- the mechanical fuel pump was attempted to be replaced by the seller, but either the aftermarket pump was bad or incorrect as it doesn\\\'t sound like the rocker makes contact with the cam, hence the replacement. I had an electric one installed instead.
- Upholstery as mentioned, also the dash pad has 3 small cracks
- the auxiliary tank connection is disabled and I do not have the key to the external door to lock it. It is in the open position.
- The original windshield has 3 cracks and a stone chip, not in the driver\\\'s view
- The glove box is missing behind the door, I ordered one already so will come with the sale
- the interior dome light does not work
- personal preference & cosmetic only, but sometime back an owner got a bit to enthusiastic with blue spray paint and painted the AC, PS, and alternator brackets, including parts of some hoses & wires, and the ignition coil. This drives me crazy but it was so long ago that it is starting to peel off on its own. Everything else is as it should be.
- Scratches and minor dings from 45 years of light use, shown in pictures
Regarding rust, there is one small spot on the right side of the bed above the wheel well that is starting to show as shown in the photos, and the exhaust as mentioned. Otherwise very rust free, even the battery boxes, cab corners, rockers, and other normal spots are well preserved. This is a Southwest truck, no cancer.
Ownership history before me:
I believe I am the 4th owner. From what the seller told me, he bought it from what he believed to be the 2nd owner, who had purchased it from the original owner in AZ, who had bought it new there. The 2rd owner was here in NM for some time, then took it with him to OR for a few years, then returned to NM. The 3rd owner I purchased it from only had it a year or so here in NM. It being here in AZ/NM, and only a short time in OR makes sense, as there is almost zero rust other than lightly on the surface where the paint faded. Luckily no one changed it along the way. There is one faded vintage AAA sticker from AZ on the rear bumper, and a Park license sticker from Lake Mead on the original windshield corner. So the truck was in AZ until the early 2000s.
I am only selling (along with the rest of my small collection) due to a death in the family, to pay for estate expenses. The NM title is clear and in my name. The odometer shows 42k and is believed to be turned over once.
