"1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Station Wagon
As advertising states from 1972 about the Cutlass wagon..More than 93 cubic feet of cargo space on a 116"" wheelbase. Almost 10 feet of cargo space with tailgate down. And while it's bigon space,it's easy to park. Standard features include Rocket V8, drop or swing tailgate, and power brakes with discs upfront.
For consignment, let just say pack the kids, pack the bags and less go packkin' down the highway.. Just shout Road Trip!! Our consignor says this family hauler runs down the highway at 80mph and nary a vibration. Those car is rockkin' those 14-inch Cragars, and looks great in the Bamboo pale yellow. Hop in for the ride, throw your stuff in back, and here we go.
Exterior
Bamboo, (a pleasant pale beige), covers the miles of steel panels that make up this wagon cruiser. The paint is showing some age and there are areas with some brush on non matching yellow which has been used to touch up. It looks like there is some rust underneath these areas. Also, there many chip offs near the backs of the wheel wells and around some of the exterior trim light bezels. I also note the body filler in the passenger rear door lower sill area. This long and glass encircled piece of Detroit iron has nicely minded gaps, and overall good condition shiny chrome and stainless. Fronting the incredibly long front hood is a split egg crate grille with dual headlights on either side, one inside the hood line and the second on the front quarter panel. A bumper below houses the parking lights and a rectangular running light is in the front of the quarter. On the lowers of the doors we have a trim spear and the rocker also has a stainless trimming on its bottom as does the wheel well surrounds. The back of the car is exaggerated in length to make room for the 93 cubic feet of cargo space and to help, a long glass window is in this massive rear quarter. In back is a window and a flip down or swinging tailgate and above the rear glasses a small roof spoiler. Vertical tail lights round the corners in the back and on the bottom is another shiny bumper also wrapping the quarters. The car has 14-inch Cragar 5 spoke chrome wheels which are wrapped by 215/70R14 BFG Radial T/A rubber on all 4 corners. Get your motor running..
Interior
The front bench has been recovered to now make it tan velour. This may have been done because the original owner of the car lived in Montana and the factory vinyl was too cold in winter. It has a bit of wear off on the leading door edge and also has brown vinyl as the bolsters. Upfront, the factory dash is in and shows clean and all there. The dash top is padded tan vinyl and the instrument cluster which includes a trio of round gauges that are mounted in a wood appliqu panel. An aftermarket tachometer is mounted to the steering wheel. Under the right side dash gauge is a stainless panel with the temp sliders. In the center the ash receptacle has been removed and there is now a hanger for the CB handset mounted there. Under this is an aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette radio. In front of the passenger is a curved glovebox. Below the dash are two aftermarket gauges in a polished panel right next to the CB radio...breaker 19 break.. Darker gold carpeting covers the floors and for the cargo space some darker saddle vinyl is covering the cargo floor. It has some tearing in it. The back bench is in the original saddle vinyl that came from the factory. As noted the rear door swings or drops depending upon which handle you pull. A saddle vinyl headliner covers the expanse of the inside roofline. Head out on the highway.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the 350ci V8 which is painted in Olds gold and it has some copper ribbed accented M/T valve coverings that are mostly chrome and polished. On top just below the open air cleaner covering is a single 2-barrel carburetor, and on back is a 3-speed TH350 automatic transmission. Power goes back to a 10 bolt rear. Stock dual exhaust is making its way to the rear exit. All hoses and wiring look in good shape and no rust is seen in this engine bay. Lookin for adventure
Undercarriage
Underneath there is some heavily surface rusted rocker edges, exhaust pipes, rear axle and driveshaft, and framing. Despite thesurface rust, thingsremain structurally sound. Th floor pans arealsosound but have a lot of patina and road dirt. The suspension is courtesy front independent coil springs and rear 4 link with coil springs. Power front disc brakes and power drums for the back. In whatever comes our way.
Drive-Ability
My partner in crime and crack decoder went with me for a cruise in this one and both took turns driving this cruiser. We were both impressed with the smooth ride, decent handling and nice smooth acceleration. When the consignor states the car can cruise smoothly at 80mph he's correct. All functions were working just swimmingly. Born to be wild!
A blast for the family past right here in our Hallowed Halls, and ready to take on all the retro trips you will conjure up. Plaster those back windows with state stickers as that clear real estate is just begging for it and have fun! Are we there yet?!!
