There is something special about Challenger convertibles. Not many were made in the E-Body configuration like the car you see here. Just 1,793 were produced for the '71 model year, which is the fewest of any of the Challenger convertible production years. Not many are around any more, though there are a few great examples of the classic convertible like this one to be found. This car was with the same owner for the last 29 years. There was a sense of pride with this car so it was well maintained, and responsibly enjoyed over time. The car you see here is a 1971 Dodge Challenger Convertible finished in Red over a white interior, and capped with a white top. The mechanical odometer shows approximately 25,572 miles, though true mileage is unknown.
Immediately noticeable are the horizontal white stripes of the R/T stripe kit, which provide a nice contrast to the red paint. Speaking of the paint, it shows nice even gloss and is bright. The body panels line up as they should, and all trim and chrome shows nicely. It's not unheard of, but it would be unexpected to have a muscle car like this that didn't have a few of the following items; hood pins, a spoiler, special badging, or some sort of stripes on the exterior. This car has all of the aforementioned accessories, as well as a fancy flip-top fuel filler cap and a performance hood. The rolling stock consists of rally wheels with beauty rings and hubcaps, which are wrapped in white letter BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The power top is in great condition, though we hope that the top is only used in those pesky situations where a surprise rain storm has popped up. Top down driving in this car is a treat. Wind in your hair, and the sound of the 383 V8 rumbling is therapeutic.
Those who have driven, or sat in a Challenger of this vintage can appreciate the lineup of gauges on the dash in front of the driver, and the center console that is contoured around the t-handle shifter. In this Challenger, a three-spoke steering wheel, faux-wood trim, aftermarket radio, and factory tachometer are items we'd like to point out. The power top is operated with a toggle switch found on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel. The interior shows very well, save for a little discoloration on the door panel on the passenger's side of the car. Otherwise the interior is well kept with trim, door handles, seatbelts, seat trim, and carpeting being clean and in good condition.
A big part of the appeal of a car like this is what's under the fancy hood. In this case, it's a replacement 383ci V8 mated to an automatic transmission. The 383 pumps out enough power to keep a smile on your face while driving the car to the tune of about 300 horsepower. The engine is fed through a dual-snorkel air cleaner, and it looks a little sportier thanks to a coat of orange engine paint on the engine block, valves, and valve covers.
With Challenger convertibles being rare when new, and few and far between nowadays, MOPAR fans should take notice of this special car. These don't come up for sale often. Having been a prized possession to the same owner for the last 29 years, it has been well cared for, and respectfully enjoyed over the years.
