"1971 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
Back in 1957, members of the Tangier Shrine of Omaha, Nebraska, got the bright idea of forming a ""precision driving team"" and arranged a special order of 13 Corvettes, which they drove in parades and other events nationwide. The Tangier Shrine Corvette Patrol was such a hit that the members decided to buy a new fleet of cars the following year ... and the next ... and the next ... finally disbanding in 1981. Perhaps the most notable year was 1962, when the patrol cars were painted purple, (the official name of the hue, developed for Cadillac, was Royal Heather Amethyst).
For consignment, we offer the 1971 version of America's sports car. This car has undergone a frame off restoration performed by a NCRS member, and has a mere 3K miles since said restoration. The restoration included an engine rebuild with some fancy upgrades to various internal parts which have increased the horses exponentially.
Exterior
All clean Mille Miglia red is covering the fiberglass panels of this sugar scoop 1971 Vette. Fiberglass and paint are excellent. An egg crate vent is within the front quarters just aft of the wheel wells, and a Stingray badge is seen just above this venting. Coke bottle side panels and fender flares accentuate the sexy lines of this body the sports a crease running mid-car for its length. Chiseled doors with their handles embedded in the sills are framed below with a stainless steel rocker covering. Chrome for the split center bumpers is in nice shiny condition, and the egg crate front split grille remains nicely preserved. Chromed side view mirrors, and window trimmings are all good as well. The black canvas convertible top, in good condition, disappears under a fiberglass hinged rear tonneau covering, which doubles as storage when the top is in the up position. Also a black vinyl hardtop for year round driving is with this beautiful example from '71. On the back, one of the snazziest rear ends you'll see in the Corvette lineup. There is no spoiler, just a split chrome bumper and the quad of round tail lights in the angled rear panel. Gosh, I miss chrome! Rectangular exhaust tips with chromed bezel surrounds in the rear roll pan are below the split bumpers. Nice polished deep dish rally wheels are on all 4 corners and nearly perfect with no curbing seen on any of them and raised white letter tires wrapping them. Just the stance of this car is worth the price of admission. I may be gravitating to the 71-72 designs from the 76-77 designs as my fav..stay tuned!
Interior
Slipping inside, you'll pass by black molded door panels, some shiny knobs and actuators. Inside black high back thin styled buckets with breathable vinyl mesh inserts and shiny bolsters are covering the chairs. The condition of everything inside is wonderfully detailed and clean. A nice center console races from back to front, and the chrome ball topped shift lever resides here. Just above is the sound system which is a modern AM/FM style, and above that the aircraft styled gauge cluster of 5 gauges monitors all the necessary vitals. Deep inset round gauges are in front of an original rally steering wheel. Also within the dash are eyeball vents and some horizontal vents in the center just above the gaggle of gauges. Black carpeting for the floors and rear storage/top down area, and all in clean fade free condition. Gotta luv it!
Drivetrain
Within a shiny restored engine bay now is stuffed with the original numbers matching block which is a 350ci LT1 version and has a hydraulic roller cam, and some aftermarket Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum heads. On top is a 4 barrel 750cfm Holley carb. On the back is a Muncie M20 4 speed manual which is correct for this car. The rear axle weighs in at 3.70. I'll say that this, mill is pure machine eye candy with polished and cast surfaces abounding, supple hoses, Hooker headers and a new MSD electronic ignition, it's no longer fooling around in standard factory 'Vette power. In fact, our consignor states, (although no documentation exists), that it puts out 475-500 galloping horses with these upgrades.
Undercarriage
Clean as a whistle with no road dirt undercarriage in black. A no drip lower engine end and like new driveshaft are seen, along with the stainless steel 2-1/2 inch exhaust with chambered mufflers...Breathe out!! Slotted disc braking is now on and with the extra horses you'll be thankful it's there. Standard independent suspension is on all 4 corners and that being independent coil spring in the front and a frame anchored differential with fully independent arms and transverse leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
Since I'm considering having a new love, possibly leaving my affinities with the 77's and glomming on to the 71-72 cuckolds, I decided a test drive would satisfy my desires. Well it was a thrill ride from the turn of the key with a booming exhaust, and it just sounds tight. On the test track it had snappy acceleration, bias free slotted rotor braking and WAY more power than the standard '71. All functions were working swimmingly, and afterward I had a cigarette!
Overall a very clean fully restored Corvette that the consignor has worked hard to get to this point. It runs great, looks even greater, and is the ""it"" color combo for this year. The engine is a sight to behold, and when you press the loud pedal you too will be impressed. Turn the key and go... Like HELL!
