"1970 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
Say Corvette and immediately one harkens back to the 1960's and 1970's when the Corvette was in its heyday with design, and power going through several iterations. It was not uncommon to snag one of these examples, and with a need for speed modify it for the strip. Since the invention of the automobile, some tinkerer, shade tree mechanic, or custom shop has been trying to make it go faster.
This 1970 C3 fiberglass shark styled body Corvette is up for consignment and deserves a serious look. This car is a coupe sporting removable roof panels, a wide body kit, and side pipes as well 400ci V8, Brodix heads, and a Brawler 4-barrel carb coupled with the numbers matching 4-speed manual transmission. We could call it a high performance small block, much like a welterweight fighter, quick, powerful, reasonably light, highly durable, and brutally effective.
Exterior
This shark, with its rear chrome bumpers and, later model neoprene pointed nose, and lower blackened egg crate grille is surrounded by neoprene and fiberglass bathed in stunning orange pearl and is in the sweet spot of the C3 years. Just prior to the performance killing EPA emissions add ons, and still enjoying just a touch of chrome. It is a color change repaintthat remains shiny, and presents overall in good condition with a few chip offs and some small bubbles within the paint in numerous areas. Badged as ""Stingray"" complete with front quarter ""gills"", chromed mirrors on the doors, chromed window surrounds, and the dual rear bumpers split for the license plate, all chrome is in good condition. Removable orange body colored roof panels make up the t-top roof and when removed show a chrome bar splitting the openings. The B pillars are of the flying buttress variety and a straight 90 degree vertical rear glass is between them. The back of the car has a slight turn up for a mini spoiler then on to the rear roll pan and the iconic round tail lights. A chromed split bumper frames the license plate inset. Snarling polished chrome and black badgedS T I N G R A Y side pipes cover the chrome edged rockers. 15-inch turbine style Hurricane wheels are all around good rubber wrapping them. A rolling sculptural artwork if you will. Gotta love the orange.
Interior
Two showroom condition charcoal gray and black sleek vinyl buckets sit within a sea of clean black carpeting which has two ""Corvette"" crossed flag logo carpet floor mats. The center console and ascending panel which works its way to the dash houses several gauges, the shift lever, and a factory looking digital radio. An extra newer water temp gauge is covering the original assumed to be not working unit and textured black vinyl is the dash front and background for the deep inset circular sweep gauges. An armrest which is located just aft of the parking brake handle fits snugly between the buckets. The dash is showing some wear and scratching of the gauge clear plastic coverings. The door panels are more black and have the knob on for the locks and armrest mounted actuator. A large black carpeted storage area backing the seats is presenting very clean and carpeting is in very good condition here.
Drivetrain
Now showing under the hood is a 400ci V8. It has Brodix cylinder heads with chromed flaming embossed valve coverings. On top is an Edelbrock Victor intake manifold and atop that is a QuickFuel Brawler 4-barrel carburetor. On back is a Muncie M20 4 speed manual transmission which is the numbers matching transmission. The rear axle is a 3.08 with a CAL stamping code. Our consignor states it is a Posi rear axle. Headers and those shiny side pipes are mounted on either side.
Undercarriage
Underneath the right side of the frame in front of the rear tire has invasive rust and some fiberglass repair. The front crossmember has invasive rust and fiberglass repairs as well and the floorpans and framing show some spotty surface rust throughout. Disc brakes are on all 4 corners and rear C3 Vette suspension is on in the form of independent coil springs in the front and transverse leaf springs for the independent rear arrangement.
Drive-Ability
This writer just adores these early 70's Corvettes and I had to take this one out. It fired right up and the test track proved to be a great drive with fast acceleration, great handling and bias free panic stopping. The functions fell short on the wipers, radio, heater blower, reverse lights, and horn which provingto all be non functional.
If you are just oogling for orange, you should be inclined to take a look at our souped up motor version of this 1970 'Vette. Visit us in our Classic Auto Mall Hallowed Halls, and have a sit in this classic, you will not be disappointed. In fact if you do have a visit and look you'll be saying orange ya glad you did?! C'ya Sunkist.
