"1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
What happened in 1969? Major News Stories include The Beatles' last public performance on the roof of Apple Records, the first Concorde test flight is conducted in France, the Boeing 747 jumbo jet makes its debut, Woodstock attracts more than 350,000 rock-n-roll fans, members of a cult led by Charles Manson murder five people, the Chapaquiddickaffair with Senator Edward Kennedy, PBS was established, the first man is landed on the moon on the Apollo 11 mission by the United States and Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the Moon.
For consignment, a blast, (literally) from the past in the form of the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. This one is special due to it having the elusive X77 code. Save for the engine stamping date and suffix code being slightly suspect and a non matching partial VIN stamped in the alternate location, all is still very correct for this 1969 Z28 Camaro including the transmission and rear axle. A title verified 67,387 actual mile example wearing a consignor stated single repaint on the consignor stated original metal, you are about to delve into one of the visually nicest examples of the fabled 1969 Z28 that has ever graced our Hallowed Halls of Classic Auto Mall.
Exterior
A consignor stated single respray of the trim tag correct LeMans Blue covers the straight steel slabs on this car, which are all minding their gaps very well and it's really nicely buffed and has a glass like presentation with only a few minor faults upon close inspection. Our consignor states that this is the original metal the car was born with, so that's an extra big plus for those desiring originality. Also, adorning the exterior are dual wide white painted on racing stripes, which.... well, race up the long hood of this pony car stopping at the front windscreen, and continue on the small rear deck and cool spoiler atop. No rust and those sexy chrome highlighted rear quarter panelgills bring this car into full fruition. Bright and shiny stainless makes another appearance on the rockers and wheel arches as well as around the clean and clear glass. All this steel frames 15-inch deep dish rally style wheels all wrapped up in 215/70R15 rubber, (from the 14th week of 2014), on all 4 corners. All chrome on bumpers, brite-work, and correct badging is excellent and mirror-like, it just doesn't get any better than this!
Interior
A swing of the doors and we can see well preserved white embossed vinyl door panels, and seats in the form of sleek high back headrest buckets in front, and a 2 plus 2 rear bench. Racing up the center is a pristine black plastic center console which houses the Hurst shifter and a bevy of4 white faced gauges in it just below the dash. Some wood grained appliqu frames the shifter, and is also used on the various portions of the dash. Speaking of the dash, all original and fairly clean, and fronted by a black center and black rimmed 2 spoke steering wheel. The dash is raked inward as it glides towards the floor and has the rally gauge package within its confines. Like new black carpet, and nicely preserved tight black headliner are all presenting as showroom. Also a shout out to the trunk too as it sports a clean checkered tweed vinyl liner, and has correct spare and jack setup and is consignor stated all original metal. Manual steering and power brakes are noted as well as an aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette radio are all installed on this X77 car.
Drivetrain
Under the reverse scooped hood residing within a pristine engine bay is a date correct, (D219), casting date and 3970010 casting number 302ci V8. Unfortunately the stamping pad has been ground down and a slightly suspicious V0911DZ stamping, (see photos), along with an incorrect partial VIN stamping is present on the alternatestamping location, just above the oil filter housing. It has a correct Holley List# 3923289 4-barrel carburetor, however the carb does carry a later assembly stamping date of post 1973 and is most likely a service replacement unit, and an aluminum Z28 intake manifold. A numbers matching, (P9D23B, April 23rd 1969), Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission is on back, and this pushes power to a BU stamped 12 bolt rear with 3.73 posi gears, although our consignor states the axle holds 4.11 gearing. A day 2 modification in the form of headerflow out of a beautifully restored Chevrolet Orange painted block, snazzy cast aluminum ribbed valve covers, and a correct air black cleaner housing. All hoses are nice and supple, and everything else is gleaming and screaming for attention under this hood. No rust or corrosion or even a speck of dirt!
Undercarriage
All's well underneath as it presents in unrestored and original form with undercoating on the flooring, rockers and supports and they are looking good! A sturdy unibody and a dual chambered rust free like new exhaust snakes by all buttoned up independent coil spring suspension on front and new leaf springs on the rear. Drum brakes are on back and discs upfront and are power assisted.
Drive-Ability
This fine muscle X77 code example fired right up, ran very nicely and handled all the challenges of our test track and critical eye for anything not working. We found all of the electrical functions to operate as they should and all else was a pleasurable muscle car experience right out of 1969 Peabody.
A beautiful restoration indeed, all around nice X77 code Camaro with plenty of attention to detail during the restoration, and all the right looks required to keep even the pickiest Camaro aficionado sated. ""Tranquility base here..the Eagle has landed!"" Now get in here fast to grab this Camaro before I put it in my own collection.
