"1968 Ford Mustang Convertible
The 1969 Mustang was an important year for the classic Ford pony car for many reasons, including some major changes in the engine specifications and power. The styling of the 68 car was a combination of refining the new from last year body style and the addition of federally mandated safety changes, including rear side marker lights. Changes for the 68 Mustang's interior were minor, overall trim detail changed very little, however due to tightening national safety regulations, a new collapsing steering column was added in Mustangs, as well as other cars of the day and was designed to have a crush zone to absorb some of the shock of a, (possibly non seat belted), driver in an impact.
A marriage made in heaven with Gulfstream Aqua on the exterior, a snazzy 2 tone aqua interior, and a black canvas convertible top. Purchased by our consignor, the 3rd owner in 2003, and barely driven 500 miles during his ownership, the body being restored during this time, and the floorboards being treated to rust remediation then the interior being treated to an update with new carpeting, door panels, window seals and new bezels, this all leaves me whispering I do, I do...really love this car!
Exterior
Bathed in a very nicely applied Gulfstream Aqua, straight steel abounds. Gaps are consistent and straight and only some minor scratches and chips are noted in the finish. The iconic hockey stick cove is present in the rear quarters and it flows into the doors. From the front bumper, deeply inset grille, galloping horse, and side trimmings as well as rocker trim, all of the chrome is very nice with no dimpling or dulling. For 1968 styling stayed slightly more aggressive than seen on the prior years with a simple grille and deeper headlights, and on the back the former outward V shaped sergeant stripe tail lights have now been inverted to inward, but still using 6 individual lights. Really, the largest difference between this year and the prior is the addition of side marker lighting. The original wheels have been retained and show withchrome wire spoke covers and faux knock offs all wrapped in nearly new 19575R14 deeply treaded thin whitewall rubber. A black power actuated canvas top in near showroom condition with a glass rear window is the dollop of whipped cream on top if you will.
Interior
The lowering of the ceremonial convertible, (a rite of summer here in our Hallowed Halls), and we see 2 tone aqua vinyl that is all in excellent condition. The door panels are light aqua painted uppers and lowers, and vinyl covered dark aqua new panels in the middle with just a touch of chrome trim surround make things just perfect. The front buckets continue with dark aqua kiwi vinyl vertically stitched inner panels, and smooth crinkle light aqua bolsters. This continues into the back seat bench as well. The buckets flank the carpeted hump with the chrome T handle shift lever dead center and within the driver's reach. A dual squared off eyebrow design is reserved for the dash top and this plays in black and is above some aqua for the painted metal on the bottom of the dash. We can note the original instrument cluster with new bezels and the original collapsiblecolumn padded steering wheel is fronting it all. Aqua carpet is in good condition, because it is nearlynew, flooding all the floors. Aqua carpetedfloor matsprotect the carpet and looking way back into the trunk we see very good condition OEM square plaid vinyl lining throughout as well as the jack and tool bag and spare tire cover, all looking like new.
Drivetrain
The correct 289ci V8 resides within the original and well restored engine bay. A blue block and cylinder heads support the 2-barrel carb on top and then the icing on the cake is the factory correct Ford Blue air cleaner assembly. On the back is a C4 3-speed automatic and putting power to the ground is a Ford 8"" 2.79 geared axle assembly.

Undercarriage
A well restored and used undercarriage presents with no invasive rust and only minor surface rust and patina on the suspension components, unibody and flooring. Drum brakes are seen all around, and single exhaust sends spent fossils through a stock style muffle to announce the V8's melody. All good down below with independent coil spring suspension up front and leaf springs out back.
Drivability
Twas a nice day indeed, so we put the top down while me and my cohort went for a jaunt. We found this car to run well, handle nicely, shift smoothly, and corner with ease. We noted all functions save for the brake lights not lighting, the high beam switch being stuck, and the right rear window regulator not working were...well...functional!
An older example still maintaining its luster, sporty interior, and smooth-running power plant. Very nice paint, clean tear free power operating convertible top, sporty wheels, and shiny chrome and trim. I feel we will be together at least until death do us part.
