"1967 Ford Ranchero 500
Ten years into production, 1967 marked a third generation Ranchero which varied greatly from the '57. It was a one year model that borrowed trim and interior from the Fairlane and was available with the largest engine for a Ranchero to date resulting in some being considered in the muscle car realm.
For consignment, a 390ci equipped1967 Ford Ranchero in mid level trim indicated by the 500 designation. Is it a car or a pickup truck? It's a bit of both and known by now as the affable ""mullet of the car world"" with the business end up front and a party in the back. Whatever you do with the back, this is a fairly rare car that likely survived a period as a working truck at some point in its existence.
Exterior
Brick Red Metallic coats the car with glossy goodness, but not without a few scuffs, inclusions and flaws. The bumpers are painted a matte black for some contrast and the stacked headlights were new for '67 and didn't make it to '68. The grille looks like the cells of an Excel spreadsheet while a Fairlane badge is in the center. Two power dome hood scoops give the car an aggressive look and hint at what's lurking under the hood. The metalwork including grille, door handle, mirrors and window frames are in presentable condition with room for improvement. A longhorn emblem on the rear pillar is fantastic and the bed is protected by a spray liner. The smooth tailgate is flanked by vertical taillights and dual exhaust tips protrude past the bumper. 15-inch Weld ProStar wheels are wrapped by staggered size tires and the drums have been painted red to match the body.
Interior
Black vinyl door panels feature a vertical faux wood applique from some country appeal, and the panels themselves are in great condition and framed in red paint. The split bench seat mirrors the ribbed pattern of the panels in black vinyl and also seems to be in excellent shape. A half horn ring fronts the black steering wheel, both with some patina, and shares the column with the shifter. Straight ahead in the horizontal speedometer flanked by two square gauges, one for fuel level, the other a clock. Mounted underneath is a temp gauge, oil pressure gauge, and a tachometer with a cautionary red light. Loop style back carpet rounds out the interior and looks good and show ready.
Drivetrain
The 390ci V8 is under the hood, so the emblems on the hood were true! It has a 4-barrel carburetor and is driven by a C6 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear wheels via a Ford 9"" rear and 3.00 gears. Drum brakes are found front and rear. Chrome valve covers on a Ford blue block look good and the bay is very clean.
Undercarriage
Super clean and dry underneath with no issues. The dual exhaust looks good as it flows into MagnaFlow mufflers and flanks a clean driveshaft. Coil springs are up front in the independent suspension while leaf springs are out back. The gas tank is gleaming metal with zero surface rust.
Drive-Ability
We get in the simple cab of the truck, er, car, and head and fire up the 390. Onto the test loop we rolled where the car performed well with good acceleration. Visibility of course, is great with no back seats or kids blocking your view of the rear window just over your shoulder. Our report card came back with some minuses, namely, the horn, clock, wipers, and odometer don't work. The heater/AC box has been removed and the steering on our short drive felt a bit loose.
Straight body lines, nice paint, and the desirable engine, this Ranchero is a people pleaser. You just don't see them much at car shows, especially this one year model. We don't know if this configuration will ever come back, (valiant effort by the Subaru Baja but two too many seats), so these car based trucks are a relic of another time and will be forever classic.
