1966 Ford F100 Long Bed Pickup
Once strictly utilitarian, classic pickup trucks are hot in the collector market because they're excellent platforms for performance upgrades and resto modding. In the early 90's, NASCAR recognized America's affinity for the pickup truck and created a race series of trucks only. They're a long way from the truck available to consumers, (no homologation?), but likely helped the sport and performance truck hobby which remains wildly popular.
For consignment, an innocent looking 1966 Ford F100 with a rebuilt drivetrain and lots of new pieces and parts for comfort, reliability, and performance. Slight Farmtruck vibes here, as it looks like your run of the mill pickup in service station white and some Gulf livery. But this Vegas native is a recent recipient of a rebuild with three on the floor and air conditioning!
Exterior
Like Moby Dick, it's hard not to miss the white. If you're a child of the 70's, you might get some Good Humor ice cream truck ruminations here, but a close look at the paint reveals it's been brushed on. You can't tell at 20 feet, but close up it does present as a shade tree paint job and possesses an old school feel normal paint wouldn't provide. There's a roughness to the painted bumpers that fits the vibe of the truck and even the emblems have a hand painted skew to them. The beautifully painted black steel wheels with moon Ford hub caps play off the white wonderfully and the Gulf decal appears on the driver's side only. The bed is in usable condition. Imperfections include a broken Twin Beam emblem, a dent on the flared fender in the front, an elongated dent on bottom right side, and some extra paint on the bumper.
Interior
Hand brushed black paint on the doors is enhanced with diamond stitched black vinyl inserts. A bright red vinyl seat cover has been added to the bench and looks great. The white steering wheel is nicely patinaed and the dash is very original. A horizontal speedometer is flanked by round gauges, all backed by a machined panel. The knobs, including those on the AM radio, are vintage and worn but not broken. The vinyl dash cover is peeling a bit, but the headliner is new per our consignor, and consists of more diamond stitching that extends to the back pillars and window surround. Black loop style carpet surrounds the floor mounted shifter housed in a rubber boot. Matching Ford branded mats are included. Our consignor states sound insulation has been installed in the entire cab.
Drivetrain
A 352ci V8 lurks under the hood and is fueled by a 2-barrel carburetor. The 3-speed manual transmission spins the driveshaft that connects to 3.25 gears in the Ford 9 inch rear. Power brakes are present with discs in front and drums out back. The consignor states that the engine was rebuilt less than 500 miles ago. Ford blue covers the engine, and the bay is clean.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with a fair share of surface rust although the new gas tank is gleaming and has been relocated under the bed. Dual exhaust flows into stainless steel mufflers and exit out of sight behind the rear quarter panels. Twin I-beam suspension, true to the emblems on the truck, are found in the front while leaf springs cushion the rear. We note some oil on the front crossmembers but otherwise the underside is straight and dry.
Drive-Ability
The truck doesn't hesitate to come to life and has a great sound. Into gear we go and out onto the tarmac and it's immediately apparent that this thing has some get up and go. The well tuned truck runs great and accelerates without any problem at all. In checking functionality, we note the radio is not working and the fuel gauge is not registering, so you'll have to keep track of consumption. It rides smooth, stops great, and provides great visibility of the big white hood.
Simplicity meets patina and merges with a freshened engine. This truck has it all plus you can haul stuff in it without worrying about ruining the bed. We wouldn't reserve this just for shows and cruise nights. It's too much fun not to drive more often!
