"1965 Ford F100 Pickup
Baseball, apple pie...and Ford F-series trucks, (sorry, Chevy guys...this is a temporary alteration). The best selling vehicle in American history and over a span of 40 years, more than 33,000,000 units have hit the street in all forms of trim levels and packages. ""Built Ford Tough"" was a common advertising axiom but has been repeated and confirmed by millions of Ford truck devotees for generations. We've seen and sold our share at Classic Auto Mall and welcome a steady flow of F-series goodness!
For consignment, a custom F100 that at first glance, conjures up the original Bigfoot monster truck. This thing is jacked, stacked, and higher than a Mack! An impressive build that seems to have come down from a lumber yard in the deep woods of the Sierra mountains...only now it's ready for car shows and truck gatherings where it will rise above all others. I don't know if you're into naming your vehicles, but this one might be called ""Babe the Blue Ox"" after Paul Bunyan's monster sidekick.
Exterior
Blur your eyes and you can see remnants of the original F100 here now open them and look at that glossy blue paint and shiny chrome. The red arrow and ""100"" on the side is a striking break in the blue and adds depth and character to the body. The ""custom cab"" door handle bezel is absolutely show quality too and we almost want to use white gloves to open this truck. The large flatbed is framed by diamond plated short walls and side-accessed tool boxes, (you know, for your axes, chain saws, and forest fire equipment). Shiny gas tanks sit under the bed on both sides and have built-in step ups. A huge, tubular step-up in high gloss chrome protrude from each side, ready for Mr. Bunyan to climb aboard. A winch hook lays in wait in the rear along with a tow ball hitch on a massive utility bumper where you'll find more chrome. 15-inch wheels are made to look much bigger by 32x12.50-15 truck tires mounted around them.
Interior
The door panels are painted body-color and house the door actuator, power window unit, and a storage pouch. The doors and jambs are gleaming and consistent with show-car quality, would likely be included in the waxing process come showtime. The blue vinyl bench seat is minty-mint as is the deep pile dark blue carpet underfoot. The steering wheel and dash are in stock form; lovely in their simplicity. Switches and knobs are period correct, if not original, and have that great mid-60's tactile feel. The center and right side of the dash continue the fine blue paint and some added switches, gauges, and CB radio are mounted under the dash. The floor-mounted shifter and the differential shifter, (4L, N, 2H, 4H), are vintage and housed in black rubber boots. The headliner is flawless and blue.
Drivetrain
Open the hood and the first thing that catches your eye are massive, silver painted wheel wells seemingly squeezing the engine into the center. And the engine...a 352ci V8 that has finned valve covers, an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, and touches of blue, purple, and red hoses and accessories. It's tied to a 3-speed manual transmission sending power to a Ford 9-inch Detroit locker rear and 3.70 gears along with a Dana 44 up front and matching 3.70's. Drum brakes bring the ox to a stop.
Undercarriage
No four-post lift was needed for this truck as we just crouched down to get a look. It's all very nice...dressed almost all in black save for the bright blue shocks at all four corners and the blue painted underbody. Surface rust colors the single exhaust but the muffler is unfazed and looks good. Leaf springs cushion the ride on all four corners. Overall, a very nice presentation.
Drivability
Setting aside any acrophobia for the moment, we hoist ourselves up to the clouds. Once inside, the familiar cab of an F100 is a comforting sight. On the ride, the truck pulls nicely and has more than adequate power. The knobby tires make some noise on the blacktop and no rattles or squeaks encumber that sound. You feel large and in charge sitting up that high, looking over a plain of deep blue paint and a long bed behind you. Power-boosted brakes would be welcome here, but early braking with the big drums do the trick. 2 frowns made their appearances during my time behind the wheel; the left turn signal would not self cancel and the fuel gauge does not read.
Big blue is an impressive truck and would stand out in any crowd. With the flatbed, you could use this truck for utilitarian needs, (moving furniture), or serve as a fantastic parade vehicle. Sure, you could winch someone out of a ditch, but that would just get things dirty...and this truck is so clean, we'd probably just call AAA. This is a fantastic, classic F100 looking for a new caretaker...one who is not afraid of heights and doesn't mind some attention.
