1965 Ford ERA Cobra 427
Technology has consistently delivered more value and a lower price. The same general principles apply to component cars. The application of new technologies in an old-world industry is what sets the ERA Replicas company apart from the crowd. Computers and CNC technology are the foundations on which the ERA Replica Company was built. They design their chassis parts, production tooling, and body shapes with the latest CAD/CAM technology. They use digital computer design software and HP hardware to design all of their cars. Computer-based technologies drive everything they do, including design, pre-production quality assurance, pilot production, product bill of materials and packlists, manufacturing cut lists, CNC laser cutting, robot trimming, and welding.
For consignment, we give you this 1965 Ford ERA Replica Cobra, and she's a black beauty with gold accenting and a killer drivetrain and solid chassis. Complete with side pipes and wide stripes, and many other goodies that emulate the original but at a budget that most can take on and have a really cool driver. And since it's all newer technology you will have way less time wrenching and more time simply driving. And all for a reasonable price that will keep that smile on your face!
Exterior
All fiberglass, all black, (save for the chrome trim and wide gold dual racing stripes), and all buttoned up this car presents nicely but does show with a few ripples in the fiberglass and a spider crack in the center of the hood. The bumpers in front are simple vertical pusher and flank an oval chrome trimmed grille opening. The long racy downward beginning slope rises to the windshield and along the way a scoop opening is highlighted by dual wide gold painted racing stripes. Low slung fenders on either side house a single round headlight and a small bullet turn signal just below. These fenders melt into the doors which are nice and small. On the way back on either side we see the iconic vents and a 427 badge. The rockers are hidden with the massive snarling and snaky side pipes all in intimidating black. Behind the doors the rear undulating up and then down fenders begin with their rounded over tops. These run rearward almost to a rounded over bulbous point where vertical rectangular tail lights reside. A rounded over trunk is between these bodacious fenders, sports more gold wide racing stripes, and all are crowned on the bottom with a chromed curved bar bumper and more vertical pushers welded to them. On the top just prior to the trunk lid is a single chromed roll bar. A wonderful stance with a combination of the flared fenders which gracefully frame polished 15-inch polished Halibrand style wheels wheels which have true knockoff spinners are wrapped in like new 235/60R15 in front and wider 295/65R15's in front BFG rubber which is all actually from 1991.
Interior
With a swing of the small doors and because it's a kit car the builder can go all out and in this case I'm all in with high end black suede inserts and a black leather pouch along with the original style actuator in the outer corner of the panel. I slip inside to black leather covered low back bomber style rounded over buckets which have tuck and roll inserts and racing belts. A wide black carpeted console/drive shaft hump is racing from front of the dash to the back compartment and this houses the ergonomic angled Hurst shift lever. A black painted round over bar material V riser supports the dash which is pristine, padded and has a bevy of round black faced white lettered chromed bezeled Smiths gauges. Also a few obligatory knobs, pulls, and toggles are seen peppering the area along with a small glove box in front of the passenger. A wonderful 16-inch hardwood rimmed steering wheel fronts this dash and I can look to my right and note the dash top mounted rear view mirror. More black Wilton, (Ohh La LA!), carpeting covers the floors and is very clean and like new with some embroidered ERA logo floor mats on top.
Drivetrain
A pop of the clamshell hood and what to my wandering eyes do I see? None other than a gleaming 427ci V8 side oiler. This mill was fashioned by Danbury Competition engines and features a Crane Cam with .563i/587e lift cam, roller rockers and forged pistons. The engine codes out as a 1965/66 Side oiler, (casting C5AE-H). It has Edelbrock Aluminum heads with cast ribbed COBRA badged valve covers. A Holley 750cfm double pumper 4-barrel carb feeds it fossils and air, and strapped top the back is a 4-speed manual Toploader that features a close ratio throw. On the pumpkin its is a 3.31 Jaguar Dana 60 IRS rear axle. Headers and side pipes are there for the exhale and more noise!
Undercarriage
All clean underneath with a tubular powder coated frame, and all aluminum floor pans. All solid and rust free it is all well done underneath. 12x1 front rotor disc brakes feature Sierra 4 piston calipers and new pads. The back also has disc braking. Independent coil over front suspension has adjustable shocks as does the rear independent suspension. The wheels roll on ERA 6 pin wheel hubs which is a 5K option added into this machine.
Drive-Ability
This candle lit right up and ran strong through the entire test drive. Snappy acceleration, good handling and our test driver reported just a little happy on the front end when applying the power. All functions worked, and it stuck to the road like glue. Just be careful of being too goosey with your boot.
It's like driving Darth Vader with its all black and just a hint of gold striping and some added chrome trimming. It's a high end build leaving no stone unturned on the quality of parts for the drive train, and the leather interior is just pristine. This replica is probably one of the best to grace our Hallowed Halls. Go Shelby!
