"1964 Plymouth Sport Fury Hardtop
In 1964 the Plymouth Sport Fury was again a two-door hardtop coupe or a convertible, wearing wide body-side molding with color insert, Sport Fury lettering and script, special wheel covers with simulated knock-off hubs, and bucket seats. V8 engines were standard and buyers seeking additional power could equip the Sport Fury with the 426 Super Sport 'Max-Wedge Stage III' V8. For the entire Fury line, the most popular body style was the sedan with 34,901 examples produced, followed by 26,303 of the two-door hardtop, 13,713 of the hardtop sedan, and 5,173 of the convertible. The combined station wagon production was 8,128 units. The hardtop coupe was the more popular of the two Sport Fury body styles with 23,695 examples built compared to 3,858 of the convertibles.
A lot of the cars we see didn't start out life as tire shredding muscle machines, they were morphedinto them as years went by and the desire for speed and power grew. Way back on December 10th, 1964, a gentleman walked into Calvin J. Wagner Chrysler, Plymouth, Valiant in rural Myerstown, Pennsylvania and fell in love with a blue and white 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury. After the negotiations were done a great looking and powerful Plymouth was now about to roam the streets of Myerstown, Pennsylvania. We present to you that car, now for consignment in all its big block, bucket seat and floor shifted glory. A 2 owner car with some detailedservice notes and receipts along with 89,483 titleverified actual miles and a single repaint performed on the blue in 1993 put us firmly in survivor territory. With only one larger engine option available this Plymouth could still hold its own, startling the Mennonite and Amish neighbors throughout the area. Just a side note, C.J. Wagner is still in business today, while no longer selling new cars they have a prominent location at the corner of routes 422 & 501 still right in Myerstown, PA.
Exterior
Classy and luxurious Medium Blue Metallic, one of the original colors, covers nicely straightened steel panels all around. Up high on the roof is the factory original white paint, but now like the blue, protected in clear coat from the 1993 repaint of the blue. Chrome and trim work is all good with few faults, even when studying it closely. This chrome and silver painted spear runs the gamut on the sides and presents itself at the belt line and does a beautiful job of breaking up the blue steel slabs. A pristine electric shaver front grille is flanked by dual headlights and a shiny chrome front bumper. A shout out to the B pillar with its V shaped design that adds to the very nice line this car produces. 14-inch steel wheels with Fratzog badged spinner caps are on all 4 corners all wrapped in nearly new 205/75R14 thin whitewall Hankook radials.
Interior
Nearly perfect front buckets and matching rear bench are draped in blue vinyl, just the way the factory built it. Between the front seats is a full-length console which houses not only a glove box but also a brushed aluminum surround plate from which the chrome handled black ball topped chrome armed shifter grows. An original dash with a metal front and ribbed padded dash top houses all the correct gauges and includes a factory clock. An original steering wheel is in front of this dash and shows with twin half moon horn rings surrounding the Plymouth badged center. Moving across the dash we see the slides for the heater control and the original AM All Transistor radio. Excellently preserved blue carpet floods the floors, and a tight light blue headliner is above.
Drivetrain
Lifting the long blue hood we are met with a shiny blue unrestored and original engine bay. The focal point in here is the Chrysler Turquoise painted correct 383ci V8 topped with a 4-barrel carburetor and a black air cleaner assembly making a tire shredding 330hp. All hoses and wires appear fresh and supple. On the back is an A727 3-speed automatic transmission and to put power to the ground is a 3.23 geared 8 3/4"" rear axle. All business and all original here!
Undercarriage
The frame, rockers, body hangers, and floor pans all are looking straight and secure with no rust, just miles of black paint and undercoating. Some newer steering components are now installed, and correct factory independent torsion bar front suspension is on while the rear suspension features leaf springs. Power drum brakes are noted all around as is a dual exhaust system with stock style mufflers.
Drivability
A well preserved engine that fired right up, and off we went! Plenty of brute power in this car offering up some great acceleration while the Torqueflite shifted the gears flawlessly. This car has the ability to wear two coats, the one of a high performance bruiser and also one of a good cruiser. The steering was nice and tight, and brakes stopped us quickly. All functions were working during our test drive...dig those AM radio tunes!
A well built by the folks at the Newark assembly plant and well sorted piece of Mopar history, bought locally and enjoyed thoroughly. A very nice original blue interior to compliment the 2 tone blue and white exterior and the factory wheels to set the package off. Presently residing in the North wing of our Hallowed Halls and waiting for you to come enjoy.
