"1964 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle Convertible
The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks good no matter how it's built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired. That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body. Plus, when you factor in this ride's drivetrain, tastefully restored interior and first rate, all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an incredible classic car!
Looking at this interesting version of the 1964 Chevrolet Malibu convertible I have shades of the Pacific Coast Highway, driving across the Bixby Bridge, heading to point Lobos to do some Ansel Adams-esque image capturing. Windows down, tickling the accelerator, headed north from Big Sur, does life get any better? I answer adamantly YES! Especially when said Chevelle was frame off restored starting in 2016, final assembly started in July 2020 and has a date correct and possibly original 230ci I6 and it wears a respray in a beautiful shade Silver Blue, (Iridescent Silver Blue). With multiple AACA wins, 2021 Charlotte Spring Nationals 1st place, 2021 Hershey Eastern Fall Nationals 1st place, and a 2nd place at the Virginia Beach Grand Nationals. I give you the inspiration for this memory, the Chevy Malibu convertible, right here on the east coast at Classic Auto Mall
Exterior
Keeping true to the trim tag, a wonderfully deep application of Silver Blue paint, in epoxy form, bathes the slab steel sides of this 1st year drop top Malibu. A few runs in the paint, unevenly applied body filler and a few sanding scratches are noted in the lower panels, but otherwise nothing remarkable. A nicely restored horizontal ribbed grille with Chevy badge in the center has dual headlights and a shiny bumper below. As we work our way rearward, good gaps and britework are noted throughout. This car is badged with the 230 and checkered flag on the bottom of the front quarters, along with the Malibu badges in your grandmother's script on the rear quarters. Lest we forget the most important part of this Malibu, the crisp and clean power convertible top that is showing in white canvas with a crystal clear rear window. 14"" deep dish wire wheel covers with highly polished faux knock off spinners are on all 4 corners and are wrapped with 7.00-14 medium whitewall rubber all around from the 38th week of 2019.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we greet 1960s styling with a blue vinyl panel with a body colored Silver Blue steel upper section. This panel has the door actuators and window cranks as well as a blue vinyl covered pull/armrest, power window toggles, some tuck and roll vertical stitching and a Chevrolet crest within an aluminum circle. Inside we see the medium blue imitation leather low back front split bench seat with some chrome trimmings on the sides and blue seat belts. Blue carpeting surrounds the seats and in back is a blue vinyl bench with some armrests built into the sides. Fronting the dash is an original blue and dark blue plastic rimmed steering wheel with its bowtie logoed 2 spoke chrome trim and half round horn ring. The inverted V style aluminum dash drips of 60' bowtie styling, the original center gauge cluster, which is flanked by the speedo on wheel left, and a temp, oil, fuel and amp cluster to wheel right. A clock is in the center. Original pull knobs function perfectly, and the original AM radio is in its factory location. Rounding out our tour is the well restored trunk with its correct splatter paint, plaid mat and full sized spare.
Drivetrain
Inside the fully restored engine bay is a date correct and possibly original 230ci inline 6 cylinder mill. Nice orange/red block is now topped with a 1-barrel carburetor under the black painted and chrome lidded air cleaner assembly. Also, on the back is a Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission sending power back to a 10-bolt axle with a 3.08 gearing. All is very nicely done under this hood with a big shout out to the attention to detail that was taken during the resto.
Undercarriage
A strong black frame provides the foundation for the clean black floor pans and rockers. Only very minor surface rust is noted on a few areas of the suspension and driveline. Independent coil spring suspension is on the front and for the rear a 4-link system with coil springs provide the ride. Power drum brakes front and rear, power steering, and factory style single exhaust can take you down the road swiftly and safely.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and on the test track it performed nicely with great acceleration and smooth shifting. All functions were working just swimmingly on our drive, and I enjoyed this non hot-rodded and non-V8 skate so much I took an extra 3 laps around the track just to soak in that trip in time back to 1964.
An multiple AACA award winning example of the '64 Malibu convertible that stays true to what most people were driving back in the day. Very few flaws on the body and paint front, and nice chrome and brightwork along with the interior being very clean and inviting and the engine is looking great and performs as such. I'm California Dreamin'.
