"1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza
The Corvair was highly unusual for a domestic car, with its air-cooled, rear-mounted engine featuring the compact horizontally opposed piston layout of Porsche and VW Beetle engines. It also had an all-independent suspension and unitized construction. Some called the Corvair the ""poor man's Porsche"". A bit of trivia to leave you with, the Corvair name is derived from a combination of Corvette and Bel Air!
For consignment, a Chevrolet Corvair Monza edition from 1963. This car will need some TLC, however it shows nicely, but upon closer inspection, has some rust bubbling and scratching of the exterior paint. This car is badged as a Monza and the engine bay reveals a non turbo charged flat 6-cylinder engine. The interior is very nice and appears to have been restored in the past, and it runs and drives just fine.

Exterior
A respray of Silver Blue presents in good condition covers the rounded body. A few dents and dings are present throughout the all steel body, along with some underlying rust bubbling and cracking. Chrome and brite-work, and original badging are all there, and correct, with gaps that are straight and true. In lieu of the round turbo logo found on the rear deck of the higher end cars, there is a neat and clean CORVAIR emblem with a molded in line struck through it. A stainless-steel rocker trim is on either side and all window trimmings and glass are clean. Corvair style wheel covers are wrapped by correct size 13"" white wall radials. Of note, since this car has been moved to our outdoor corral, since then a less than honest individual has absconded with the passenger side headlight bezel...heathens!
Interior
A swing of the driver's door reveals a clean utilitarian no frills interior. 2 large light blue colored vinyl buckets in good condition stretch across the front and a large bench is shoehorned into the rear of the car. The seats front and rear have minor soiling from storage. The shifter sits within the original blue painted steel and carpeted topped dash which shows in original condition. The gauge cluster is an aluminum and stainless panel, houses all the essentials, and is fronted by the original 2 spoke blue plastic steering wheel with semi-circle chrome horn ring. Carpeting floods the floors and is light blue with some minor fading and soiling. The headliner is tight and shows with some mildew staining but is un-ripped. The factory AM radio sits within the center of the dash and just above is the essential of the 1960's...and ashtray. A good afternoon's worth of detail will bring the vast majority of this interior right back to top notch condition.
Drivetrain
Mounted into the rear is the horizontally opposed 6-cylinder 164ci boxer engine. It has dual 1-barrel carburetors to feed it fossils and air and there is a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission on the back. A 3.55 final drive puts the power to the pavement.
Undercarriage
Underneath we see surface rust mostly reserved for the suspension and framing near the back. As a matter of fact, the only area of invasive rust we noted was the battery tray on the driver's rear of the engine compartment. This will need replacing before any lengthy driving is done. Black undercoating is covering the floors and has a few areas of peel off. The remainder of the floorpan is rust free and solid steel for the rockers. 4-wheel independent suspension and drum brakes are all around.
Drive-Ability
After checking the fluids and a little help from starting fluid this car started right up and on the test track was mechanically sound. The only frowns that crept up during the drive was a horn that didn't toot, and the accelerator occasionally sticks. The car handled well and had solid braking for the panic stop test. All in all, a nice drive from a unique car.
With some minor TLC you can have a really nice and forward thinking rear engine sports car. You'll have a classic that is a driver, survivor, and unique looking concept that lasted for a 10-year run.
