"1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham
In their day, Cadillac's Eldorado Brougham was as good as luxury motoring got. The Brougham was meant to put Cadillac at the top of the car-world's pecking order-and deliver a good, hard slap to Ford and its premium-priced Continental MkII in the process. In an era when Rolls-Royces cost $10,000, the Eldorado Brougham started at $13,074. There were choices-paint color and interior upholstery, for example-but no options.
For consignment, a survivor that has spent most of its life in storage and as a result does not currently run. It does however have its all original steel and factory paint, as well as the Parisienne Blue shantung slubbed silk upholstery, and deep plush mouton, (lamb's wool), carpeting. This carpeting gives the interior a distinct smell when entering, most likely from lack of use. A large finned 50's luxury road liner and with this car one can definitely say you've arrived...provided you can get her running!

Exterior
Design head Harley Earl combined features from a couple of Motorama show cars including the 1953 Orleans, which presaged the panoramic windshield and the pillar-less four-door hardtop/suicide rear-door configuration, and the El Camino coupe concept of 1954, which gave us the brushed stainless-steel roof. Making the ""Florentine"" roof a styling feature made some sense. Leading the way are dual massive Dagmar bumpers that dive toward the front quarter edges and wrap around them. Another large bumper is below and frames the bottom of the chromed egg crate grille. Above on either upper corner we see a new innovation in the form of dual headlights, and following the style of the day these reside under a visor. On the passenger's side, a small parking lot accident has claimed the bezel from the headlights and created a dent in the visor. A wrap-around windshield is in front and it begins the totally stainless steel roof. This has the sexiest rear wrap around glass just prior to the NYC 3 bedroom trunk lid. The lid is flanked by massive fins with vertical tail lighting in their edges. On the pillar-less sides the 4 doors have nicely minded dopas. Below is more chrome trimmings for the rockers which also widens and frames the rear tires' wheel wells, and blends into the rear split bumper with built in exhaust exits. Some extra round tail lighting and backup lights are also within these bumpers. The car floats on Cadillac shield badged wheel coverings wrapped by triple white sidewall striped tires.
Interior
This car was so expensive due to the use of exotic materials and plenty of convenience power options. This example sells nothing short. Inside, as we pass by the blue leather padded covered door panels, we can experience some of the conveniences all polished and lined up for use. These include window toggles, a lock mechanism, seat adjustment knobs within the armrest, and the actuators all chromed. Also noted is a side view mirror handle to adjust the mirror! Inside for your seating we can see Parisienne Blue shantung slubbed silk upholstery, which has shiny blue, (and aged), leather on their edges. These are also buttoned and there is a matching rear bench. These luxurious chairs are original and showing some aging. They sit within chromed edged structural futuristic shaped boxes if you will, to hide the electrics for the adjustments. The dash is fully appointed with the GM horizontal speedo which is flanked by 4 circular chrome gauges just below. Some climate sliders are in a panel on the bottom of the dash. On the dash top is a headlight sentinel which automatically dims the headlights when it senses oncoming traffic at night. On the passenger's side of the dash is a factory AM radio and a small clock as well as a cigarette station and ash receptacle. Below the ash is a large heater. The carpeting is basically dry rotted but still there as original and giving off the distinct smell of the interior. The headliner remains tight but shows some aging on the blue colored fuzzy broadcloth. A shout to the trunk liner which is fully carpeted and in amazingly good condition.
Drivetrain
Under the long hood in all its patina glory resides a numbers matching 365ci V8 It's fed by 3 2-barrel carburetors and has a 4-speed automatic Hydramatic on the back with a 3.36 rear axle turning the tires. Stock exhaust and a massive air cleaner snoot covering is mounted to the top of the mill.
Undercarriage
Showing some moderate to heavy surface rust, the undercarriage remains solid. It features a large X frame through which the driveshaft runs and there is some invasive light invasive rust at the drivers side of the rear door just aft of the thresh-hold. This boat floats on independent coil sprung suspension for the front end, and for the rear a 4 link with air spring. Power drum braking is on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
The car does not run for start, as is the case with most cars coming out of long term storage, some TLC is in order. We can tell you that the engine does turn over by hand. It was like my living room sitting in it though, although I do not have Parisienne Blue shantung slubbed silk upholstery!
A mass of masterful design, a heap of heavy steel and chrome, a plethora of conveniences all wrapped up in a fanned 50 luxury road boat. Gotta love the rich.
