"1956 Chevrolet 150 2-Door Sedan
If you've ever wondered where rental car companies, police and government agencies, and companies that need a lot of cars get their supply, it's ""fleet"" vehicles that manufacturers build just for this purpose. These tend to be the no frills versions of the better equipped cars that are offered to the general public for sale. Turns out, the Chevy 150 was intended to be almost exclusively a fleet vehicle but was also sold as an economical alternative to the Bel Air and 210.
For consignment, a hot rod Chevy 150 that's a far cry from the plain Jane cars of old. This one's been modified and has more desirable ingredients than a 10 course meal. A modernized interior, a rip roaring engine, and slick black paint and bling inducing chrome. A spectacular stance and go fast goodies make this 2nd year Tri-Five well worth a look!
Exterior
Doused in two stage black paint, our big 150 is a gleaming example of mid 50's flow and design. Big chrome bumpers and polished metal spears adorn the car and give it the character and presence associated with the Tri-Five era. Not a bad exterior for a base level Chevy! The other metal work, including window frames, door handles, side mirror and the epic hood ornament are all in great shape. 15-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels add bling to the shoes and the teardrop shaped rear wheel opening gives the car a flowing rear quarter when combined with the sloping, slightly wrapped around rear window. The tail light assemblies could be wall art on their own as is, they're just amazing. As far as imperfections, we found a single chip in the paint and what my detailer friend calls ""love marks"" swirls and subtle scratches from something used to wash or dry the car.
Interior
The interior is awash in clean, smooth khaki leather and it's immediately obvious that someone with attention to detail finished this interior. Beautifully designed door panels with sweeping stitched patterns host clean metal window cranks and door actuator. The bucket seats are soft and well padded, and the rear bench is in perfect condition. The muted tone of the interior makes it an inviting and relaxing place to be, like a well appointed living room. The tan carpet is protected by matching mats which are trimmed in the khaki color, blending perfectly with the leather surroundings. Khaki leather also wraps the steering wheels and glossy matching paint covers the metal dash blending seamlessly. A black faced speedometer fans across the dash while an AutoMeter Sport Comp tachometer protrudes from the steering column. A hidden AM/FM/CD JL Audio 6-channel system is present and is XM compatible. A trio of gauges in a horizontal line are in the center, leather clad console. That console is spotless and houses only one other thing, the Hurst shifter with its matching leather boot. Further back, aluminum cup holders are embedded. The matching headliner is in excellent condition and the trunk is lined in the same color mats and houses a subwoofer and amplifier.
Drivetrain
A 383ci stroker V8 with JE forged pistons, a Comp cam, Crane roller rockers atop Edelbrock aluminum heads is under the hood and was professionally built. It is said to have put out 440 horsepower when dyno tested. A Holley 850cfm4-barrel carburetor sits atop an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. ARP bolts hold the engine together and MSD ignition provides the spark and it all gets routed through a T10 4-speed manual transmission back to 3.70 gears with positraction in a high performance carrier with heavy duty bearings. The engine bay is not only the epicenter of power, but is beautifully clean and polished. Ceramic coated Doug's headers glisten as they make their way south. Power disc brakes cinch rotors on all corners. There's more to this drivetrain and our space is limited, but that oughta whet your appetite.
Undercarriage
With a topside as clean as this one, we expected a clean underside and indeed the car delivers. The 2.5 inch dual exhaust flows the length of the car before meeting two Flowmaster mufflers which then dump discreetly under the car tucked behind the quarter panels. The front has independent front suspension with coil springs as well as 2-inch drop spindles and tubular arms. The rear has a monoleaf spring with a 2-inch drop. We note a drop of oil on both the oil filter and the oil pan.
Drive-Ability
Holy smokes!!! This thing lights right up and sounds good. And no big surprise, the interior is a very nice place to be. We rolled this black beauty onto the test loop and tested all functions which seemed to be working. Rowing through the gears, the car pulls like a freight train and stops on a dime.
From lowly economy option to queen of the ball, this car is a Cinderella story in metal and leather. Beautiful on the inside and out and with a heart of gold, this is one nice 150 that deserves an immediate proposal. Okay, Prince Charming, it's time to make the call on this one before you turn into a pumpkin.
