In the beginning of home delivery, milk was carried by horse drawn wagons. In 1909, the Electric Car Company made trucks for home delivery. By 1931, the gas engine was being used by the Detroit Industrial Vehicle Company (DIVCO). Over the years, Divco made many new and improved models, all with the patented walk through feature, using the drop frame design for easy delivery. The sit or stand drive was used as a quick delivery feature. In 1931, the twin coach design was used for the ever famous snub nosed milk delivery truck. During that time, Divco sold 333 chassis for non-dairy use. 195 chassis went to the Helms Bakery in Los Angeles and 138 went to the Spring Baking Company in Cleveland, Ohio, with 60 being purchased by the Baker Truck Rental in Denver, CO. The Helms Bakery purchased an aluminum body made by the Standard Body Company in Los Angeles. These bodies were mounted on the 195 chassis provided by Divco from about 1931-1948. This truck is 173 of the 195. I purchased this truck from a route driver in 1969. Its a really fun vehicle to own, its just time for me to pass it on for more fun times in the future. Happy cruising.
