"1940 Plymouth P10 Club Coupe
There's something dignified, even stately, about a Plymouth's 1940 P10 Convertible Coupe; with its upright, classic design cues, skirted rear fenders and formal top profile, it's the sort of car that one cruises in-top down, seeing and being seen-but never races or drives in an otherwise undignified manner. Unless it will be receiving a little something extra under the hood-and then it's all right to surprise unsuspecting flathead Ford V-8 drivers.
For consignment, a beautiful buttoned up and customized Plymouth P10 Club Coupe from 1940. Owned by the current consignor since the 1980's with all of the modifications having been performed by the owner, making for a truly custom hot rod. It has a wonderfully powerful 354ci Hemi NOS crate motor, the original roofline, a customized front end, and a newer more modern interior. The perfect car to cruise with a 2.73 rear axle which is smooth as silk on the highway at cruising speed and always eager to make little noise with a good of the throttle. Pull the trigger before someone else takes a shot at it!
Exterior
Deep inset frenched headlights are the front end highlight and these are on either corner of a very curvaceous front grille. The grille has a vertical trimming that rises gracefully to the top of the bodacious bulbous hood. At its front round over point, a horizontal trimming begins its journey along the side of the hood and eventually runs the length of the car at the upper door line then on to the rear quarters. The front bumper has been shaved and this actually accentuates the lines with the mix of the chrome trimmings and the deep end of the pool dark candy red, which has been expertly applied. All new reproduction glass has been fitted and the car retains much of its original charm with the english wheel shaped fenders and a small running board. A rounded rear glass begins the long gently curving trunk lid which goes with the rear quarters and makes its way to the rear chrome bumper still on the car. The license plate has been frenched into the lid and some chrome bezeled vertical tail lights are on the curvaceous fenders. Chromed 15-inch American Racing ""hurricane"" style wheels are wrapped by 195/55R15's on front and beefier 225/75R15's on back for that extra push off the line. Badging and chrome are all just perfectly restored for this Plymouth rod.
Interior
A swing of the well gapped doors reveals an all new updated interior. It uses a mix of tasteful steel gray and white leather and these panels for a small swoop pattern on the doors. A bit of broadcloth also peppers the area within the armrest. The car has power windows and a nice chromed curved actuator. Throw in some curved chrome trimming and we have excellence! Looking inside we now have late model high back tri tone leather power buckets. These have gray leather bolsters with white edges and an ostrich pattern light gray broadcloth insert. The edging has burgundy piping for added interest. Also burgundy PLYMOUTH embroidery is on the head rests. An equally impressive rear bench in the same pattern is stuffed in the back. The modernization continues with a deep candy red tilt steering column topped by a maroon leather wrapped three spoke billet styled rally wheel. The original dash has been covered over with a stainless steel panel and within a few black faced and white letter SW gauges reside along with some billet style pulls. A modern AM/FM/Cassette player resides in front of the passenger. A long stem Lokar shifter rises to the driver's hand and this sits in a sea of nice gray thick pile carpeting. Above is a gray felted headliner and this sports a custom ribbed center panel with the dome light inserted within. A shout out for the trunk which is not to be outdone by the interior which has gray carpeting, gray leather sides, ostrich broadcloth for some side inserts, more thin chrome trimming and hint of white leather in the back of the trunk. Wow factor times 10!
Drivetrain
Under that luscious shaped hood in a perfectly restored engine bay sits the354ci crate hemi which is new old stock and has never been installed in any car. It has a red painted intake manifold and some chromed valve covers. An oval shaped air cleaner cover filters air for the 4-barrel carburetor residing just underneath it. Supple hoses and wires and the original gold radiator resides in front as well as a chromed alternator. On the back is a TH400 3-speed automatic. Dual Flowmaster exhaust is on for the exhale and is in like new condition and the rear is an 8-3/4 inch 2.73 cruising gear axle.
Undercarriage
As expected the undercarriage has a slight patina look, minimal surface rust on the leaf springs and has been totally undercoated. Solid steel X framing is looking great and new lines snake throughout. The bottom end of engine is clean and drip free. Independent front suspension is on in front and leaf springs are on back. Power disc braking goes with the independent front and power discs are on back to bring this rodder to a stop.
Drive-Ability
All I can say is that it is a fab driver. On the test track I experienced smooth hemi acceleration, stop on a dime bias free braking and good modern car handling and ride. All is very comfy and nice and I found the radio to not belt out any tunes.
When a passionate restorer works on a car it becomes something special and this car fits that bill. All is looking great and it retains some original looks with a modern twist, nice modern interior and a tasteful Plymouth 1940's rod ripe for the picking. Set sail to Classic Auto Mall and check out this ""rock"", ( Plymouth that is)!
