"1929 Ford Model A Sport Coupe
By a wide margin, Ford Model A's are the oldest cars with a large following. There are chapters of the Model A Ford Club of America in every state and internationally in places like New Zealand and Sweden! There's a chapter in my little college town of Cedar City, Utah, (population 36,000), and another one in the next town over! All this to say these are still wildly popular and important cars and while we don't claim to sell as many as Henry Ford, we have seen our share of Model A's.
For consignment, a wonderfully restored example of the classic Ford Model A Sport Coupe from 1929. Per our consignor, a complete nut and bolt restoration was completed in 2015 after an exhaustive 20 years of accumulating the correct parts. And all that work has paid off. By July of 1929, two million Model A's had been sold. This is one of them!
Exterior
The steel bodied car is painted in period correct Rock Moss Green and black. I know we throw the word ""iconic"" around, but this truly is! The dark colors are offset by the new tan canvas roof and visor and yellow 21-inch wire wheels and the contrast is spectacular. The matching yellow spare is mounted on the back. A yellow pinstripe provides more interest as it begins at the door hinge and flows down with the rounded rear that houses a rumble seat. The landau bars are painted green to match and have polished metal components. The chrome bumper and radiator surround are also in excellent condition. Very minor paint chips comprise the only imperfections on this amazing exterior.
Interior
Brown tweed door panels immediately conjure up thoughts of the ""old days"" and include a pleated pouch. The material covers the bench seat as well and we're sad to see some damage on both sides, likely the work of mice or moths. A rumble seat is covered in brown vinyl and is likely more durable when exposed to weather. The standard 4-spoke steering wheel is in place and in the center of the dash, the gauge cluster in a polished metal panel. The metal dash is painted body color, and the floor is covered in a black rubber mat in perfect condition. The floor mounted shifter, parking brake, and pedals are in fine shape. New top wood and canvas complete a lovely interior.
Drivetrain
A 201ci four cylinder is in place looking fresh in the engine compartment. Our consignor tells us it was rebuilt with larger pistons and rings and is accompanied by electronic ignition, a rebuilt starter and generator, and new wiring. It's fed by a rebuilt 1-barrel carburetor and motivated by a 3-speed manual transmission that was rebuilt and has a new clutch. Joining ""club rebuilt"" is the rear differential which houses 3.78 gears. The mechanical drums were redone as part of the restoration and as you can see, time, money and effort were put into this car to make it a ""better than new"" example.
Undercarriage
Simple, clean, and dry is the name of the game underneath. The single exhaust meets a stock style muffler and then traverses along the bottom where it dumps just before the rear axle. Transverse leaf springs and wishbone suspension occupy both the front and the rear.
Drive-Ability
With a new battery and electric fuel pump, this old bird starts right up. 100 year old cars can be tricky, but this one has some upgrades that make it pleasant to drive without sacrificing its originality, this is no resto-mod for sure. A short loop around the lot and we confirm this car runs, stops, turns, and turns heads!
The list of Model A clubs is six pages long, so if you're just getting into them, or you're an experienced old Ford person, there are people out there who share your passion who often get together to keep the spirit of these early American legends alive. These make wonderful parade cars too and we love when one shows up at Cars and Coffee. Move over, Exotica, a founding father has arrived!
