Twenty years since it was first introduced at General Motors’ Motorama, the Chevrolet Corvette had firmly established itself as the company’s halo car and aspirational model.

Despite the energy shocks that raised prices at the gasoline pumps that year, Corvette sales jumped by more than 3,000 units over 1972 sales.

Dressed in Medium Bright Blue (code 922), the two-seater’s paint and trim are in overall very good order with minor blemishes. The car’s bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is tidy and the combination body-colored front and chrome rear blade bumpers fit tightly the body. There’s a luggage rack on the rear for additional storage.

The 1973 model year started Corvette’s transformation from muscle to touring sports car. A Chevrolet advertisement headlined: “We gave it radials, a quieter ride, guard beams and a nose job.” Indeed, redesigned body mounts and radial tires did improve Corvette’s ride and interior sound levels were reduced by 40%. The chrome rear bumper was essentially carried over from the previous year. However, the chrome blade front bumper was dropped for the federally required five mph standard for a light-weight front bumper system with an inner transverse tube attached to the frame with two Omark-bolts- (special steel fasteners which absorbed energy when a forming die, pushed back by the bumper, was forced down their length), and an injection-molded polyurethane bumper cover. The urethane nose was chosen over Chevy’s other alternative, a more protruding version of the previous metal bumper. The new urethane bumper assembly added 35 pounds to the front end.

This ‘Vette rolls on Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires, size 225/60R15 in front and 255/60R15 in back. Each radial is mounted to a turbine-style alloy, popular on several Chevrolet models. The tires are in very good order, as are the wheels. This Corvette rides a 98-inch wheelbase.

Under the forward-hinged hood is a 350 CID V-8 engine (code L48) and (VIN code J). Backing the motor is a Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features included air-conditioning, power steering and power disc brakes, tilt steering column and T-tops.

Inside, the blue vinyl upholstery (code 413) on the bucket seats looks great, as does the matching carpet. The headliner is in very good order, as is the three-spoke steering wheel. The dashboard and inner door panels are all in excellent order, as is the center console. Break warning light is “on”.  A console-mounted shift lever and a factory Delco AM/FM stereo complete the interior.

Competition to this Corvette in 1973 included the Avanti II, BMW’s 3.0 CS, DeTomaso’s Pantera, Mercedes-Benz’s 450 SLC and Porsche’s 911 S.
