In the golden age of American muscle, the 442 was the ultimate option for sophisticated enthusiasts. And today, when you’re looking to grab a piece of Detroit’s finest iron without closing out your retirement, a documented Oldsmobile is one of the smartest purchases on the market. There seems to be a never-ending debate about who actually started the American muscle car wars. But at the end of the day, one thing is certain: it didn’t take long for EVERYONE to join the party. And by 1970, the tried-and-true formula for Oldsmobile’s storied 442 produced well-groomed street fighters like this 455 Holiday Coupe. This razor-sharp Olds is a documented classic that wraps a performance drivetrain in a unique color code. If you’re in the market for a first-class muscle car, it’s time to stop debating and start calling!

By 1970, the 442 was into its second generation and at its peak performance before smog regulations began to encroach on its output. For that model year, the 442 received Oldsmobile’s 455 CI V-8 engine, which produced 365 HP and 500-lb-ft of torque. Equipped with a 3.23:1 rear end, the 442 was capable of a 14.5 second quarter-mile time at 93 MPH. With updated styling cues and all that power, it should come as no surprise that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway chose the 442 as the pace car for the 1970 Indy 500.

This code 50 Bamboo 442 is a “loaded” example with a plethora of additional comfort and trim features such as factory air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, interior hood lock, AM/FM radio, deluxe steering wheel, power steering, power front disc brakes, sport mirrors, door edge guards, rubber floor mats and a M40 automatic transmission. Built at the Linden plant and sold new at Basso Oldsmobile Inc. in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, this 1970 Oldsmobile 442 is documented with a build sheet and owner’s manual.

It appears that the day of the 442 is already upon us, but it’s not too late. 442s are just starting to appreciate, so now is the time to move. Buy now and get in on the ground floor of the movement that will shortly put these into the six-figure range. It happened with the Ram Air GTOs, it happened with the LS5 and LS6 Chevelles, and it’s happening as we speak with the Buick GS. Do not miss another opportunity to be a leader instead of a regretful follower who was a day late and a dollar short. Call now to park this documented 442 in your garage!

I would be interested but would have to see pictures of complete pictures of undercarriage?

  • dynamicvin says:

Is this the drive train the car was built with

    • FutureCL says:

Hello this is a non number’s matching engine. It is a factory 455 car with build sheet. Thank you

  • rkneen says:

Never heard of a 442 with a bench seat and column shift. This must be pretty rare, huh?

    • FutureCL says:

That was actually quite common, along with an open rear end and non-performance gear ratios. Many of these were daily drivers that folks used to commute to work, school, etc.

  • huber says:

Do you have any under car photos from one end to the other? Can you do a cold start?
