The 1961 Chevrolet Impala “bubble top” is badged as an SS and comes equipped with a 409 CI engine, topped with two four-barrel carburetors and paired with a four-speed transmission.
In 1958, Chevrolet introduced the “W block” 348 CI engine in their full-size line. Responding to increased public interest in performance and horsepower, Chevrolet introduced the 409 CI engine in 1961, also a “W” block version.
Many of us remember the Beach Boys song “409,” which famously includes the line “my four-speed dual quad positraction 409,” right? Well, this 1961 Impala is equipped exactly as that iconic song describes.
The engine is a 409ci block topped with two four-barrel carburetors and backed up by a four-speed transmission, a positraction rear end, and power brakes to bring it all to a stop. Additionally, this Impala has undergone a previous frame-off restoration of a solid original body, which continues to present itself in nearly new condition.
The factory-correct blue paint and matching blue cloth interior immediately draw your attention and invite you to appreciate the stunning quality of this restoration inside and out. The poverty hubcaps and blackwall tires further enhance the overall muscle image this car exudes, as do the factory tach and factory floor-mounted four-speed shifter.
