Mercury enjoyed a strong surge in the early 1950s, and by the spring of 1955, it had transitioned from being a “junior” marque alongside Lincoln in the Ford Motor Company hierarchy to full divisional status. The 1955 Mercury models were lauded for their suspension improvements, earning praise from road testers who declared them the best-handling cars of the year. They also made a striking impression with bold new styling. The 1955 Montclair debuted as Mercury’s top-of-the-line series, positioned above the Monterey. It featured upscale trim and interior details, with striking two-tone paint and upholstery options, a color-contrast panel below the windows, and a lower ride height.

The Montclair came standard with Ford’s top 292 CI V-8 engine, shared with the Ford Thunderbird, and offered a choice of 3-speed manual, Overdrive, or Merc-O-Matic automatic transmissions. Strong sales, particularly of the Montclair 2-door hardtop, were key to Mercury’s success during the 1950s.

This 1955 Mercury Montclair 2-door Hardtop, finished in Alaska White with a Biltmore Blue roof and side panels, represents the most popular body style within the Montclair series. Distinctive “Mercury Man” trim, rear-fender skirts, and striking chrome bumpers and brightwork add to its appeal. The interior features original-appearing blue broadcloth upholstery, a visually striking two-tone steering wheel, and matching two-tone door panels and dashboard, all complementing the exterior colors. Chrome door-panel trim, chrome moldings, and a white headliner enhance the car’s elegance.

Passenger amenities include a heater/defroster, AM radio, and a dash clock. The car is powered by the standard “Super-Torque” 198-horsepower V-8 engine, paired with a 3-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. The engine has been beautifully restored, including a correct air cleaner and accessories. The tidy trunk compartment contains a spare wheel and tire. The car rides on correct steel wheels with full wheel covers and period-correct bias-ply whitewall tires, completing the iconic look of this mid-1950s Mercury.
