Artwork by Greg Stirling featuring the Porsche 917K, Winner at Lemans

50 years ago, on 14 June 1970, Porsche achieved its first overall victory with the 917 KH sports car with 580 PS, a milestone that represents one of Porsches most important successes in motorsport. To mark this occasion, the Porsche Museum took the first victorious car and five other race winners back to the original location in France.

The 917 KH with starting number 23, which was entered by the Porsche Salzburg team, weighs only 800 kilograms and was powered by a 4.5-litre 12-cylinder engine that drove the rear wheels with 580 PS. The engine had to be warmed up for only around 10 minutes before the car was ready to race. The synthetic resin skin is just 1.2 mm thick. Inside it is so tight that the driver’s helmet could touch the roof.

Greg Stirling lives and creates in San Jose, California. He is a member of the Guild of Motoring Artists, and his work has been featured in numerous automotive art auctions. Growing up he liked sketching, drafting, drawing and illustration, in college he studied mechanical engineering and machine design then started creating paintings in 1980. At the same time, he worked as a technical illustrator using ink on vellum, then as a design engineer using pencil on paper. In 1990 he switched to CAD design. In 1999 he started digital photography and posted 50,000+ images relating to stock photography, automotive art and glamour. He enjoyed taking pictures at car shows and doing digital montage and retouch on Photoshop. Now his work is a combination of digital illustration, photo montage, AI, and hand painting. To continue his area of study, Greg experimented with new techniques, media as well as innovative processes and concepts. Mr. Stirling is also an engineer, kinetic metal sculptor, and automotive enthusiast.
