1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler – 429 Cobra Jet, Factory Ram-Air, Rare Southern Car

Originally sold at Swartzfager Ford in Laurel, Mississippi, in June 1970, this true Cyclone Spoiler packs a factory 429ci Cobra Jet V8 paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. Finished in a deep blue with black stripes, it features key performance equipment including a functional Ram-Air hood, front and rear spoilers, a Competition Handling Package, a Traction-Lok rear end, and a 4-barrel carburetor.

Inside, you’ll find the optional Special Instrumentation Package with an 8k-rpm tach, oil pressure and temperature gauges, and a rim-blow steering wheel. High-back bucket seats, black vinyl interior, a push-button radio, dual rear speakers, and Cobra-branded floor mats complete the vintage muscle ambiance.

Originally Pastel Blue with a black vinyl top, the car was repainted in its current rich blue with black accents under previous ownership. Exterior details include a blacked-out grille and tail panel, dual racing mirrors, chrome bumpers, and correct Cobra, Ram-Air, and 429 badging. It rides on 15″ chrome Magnum 500-style wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/As (mounted in 2020).

The Competition Handling Package includes heavy-duty springs, a front sway bar, and upgraded KYB Gas-a-Just shocks. Power front disc brakes and power steering were added prior to the seller’s August 2024 purchase. A new dual exhaust system with a crossover and Flowmaster Super 40 mufflers was also installed.

The 429 Cobra Jet engine was factory rated at 370 horsepower and delivers a healthy, aggressive tone through the upgraded exhaust. The drivetrain is completed by the original 3-speed automatic and Traction-Lok differential.

The odometer reads 94,000 miles, with about 40 added by the current owner. Documentation includes partial service records, copies of the original sales invoice and window sticker, a parts box, and a clean North Carolina title. A small note: the title shows the first digit of the VIN as an “O” instead of a zero, matching documentation provided in photos.

This Cyclone Spoiler is a rare, powerful piece of muscle car history—well-maintained, well-optioned, and ready to be driven or shown.

  • Wampler says:

Is it possible to get more detailed pictures of the rear tail lights, headlight covers and center section of the front bumper? Also, can you advise if the headlight covers operate as they should?

    • ACC Auctions says:

      from the seller:

concealed headlights were standard with the Cyclone GTs, which also came with a small block 351 engine. The Cyclone *spoiler* came with the big block 429s, and conceal headlights were an option, and they decided not to order them.
