This 1970 Mercury Cougar Convertible is a beautifully restored luxury pony car that blends classic style with refined comfort. When Ford launched the Mustang in 1964, it kicked off a rush among American automakers to enter the new “pony car” market. Mercury joined the fray in 1967 with the Cougar, positioning it as a more upscale alternative to the Mustang—bridging the gap between the Mustang’s sporty appeal and the Thunderbird’s luxury. The result was a massive hit, with the Cougar accounting for nearly half of Mercury’s total sales that year.

Design-wise, the Cougar stood out with its hidden headlights and sequential taillights—signature features that gave it both elegance and flair. The 1970 model year brought subtle updates, including the return of the center hood extension and a distinctive “electric shaver” grille design that sharpened the front-end styling. The body grew slightly longer, and interior touches like updated hi-back bucket seats added a more refined feel. Only 2,322 convertibles were built that year, making this car a rare piece of muscle-era history.

Under the hood is a 351 cubic inch Windsor V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor, rated at 250 horsepower when new. It’s paired with a Select-Shift automatic transmission, delivering smooth and easy cruising. The dual exhaust setup produces a deep, satisfying rumble out back.

True to its luxury image, this Cougar comes equipped with power steering for easy handling and power front disc brakes with rear drums for confident stopping. It rides on whitewall radial tires with Rally-style hubcaps and trim rings, giving it a period-correct and polished look. The power-operated medium blue vinyl convertible top is in excellent shape and works flawlessly with the push of a switch. Hidden headlights and sequential turn signals add to its distinctive presence.

Finished in pearl white paint, the exterior gleams with sophistication. Inside, the Medium Blue vinyl and Comfortweave cloth seats have been properly reupholstered to match factory specs. The cabin features a padded dash, woodgrain accents, rim-blow tilt steering wheel, blue seat belts and carpeting, and a clean, original look throughout.

The instrument panel includes a 120 MPH speedometer, temperature and fuel gauges, and warning lights for oil pressure, alternator, and parking brake. A locking glovebox, climate controls, and push-button AM/FM radio round out the dash features.

Whether you’re looking to start your classic car journey or add a rare and stylish convertible to your collection, this 1970 Mercury Cougar Convertible offers an ideal blend of performance, comfort, and classic appeal.
