This 1970 Mercury Cougar Convertible is a beautifully restored luxury pony car that blends classic style with refined comfort. When Ford launched the Mustang in 1964, it kicked off a rush among American automakers to enter the new “pony car” market. Mercury joined the fray in 1967 with the Cougar, positioning it as a more upscale alternative to the Mustang—bridging the gap between the Mustang’s sporty appeal and the Thunderbird’s luxury. The result was a massive hit, with the Cougar accounting for nearly half of Mercury’s total sales that year.

Design-wise, the Cougar stood out with its hidden headlights and sequential taillights—signature features that gave it both elegance and flair. The 1970 model year brought subtle updates, including the return of the center hood extension and a distinctive “electric shaver” grille design that sharpened the front-end styling.
