This 1969 Chevrolet Impala SS convertible is a rare and unusual classic Chevrolet. During the early days of the performance era, before the emergence of smaller-bodied cars, automotive manufacturers raced to meet the demand for high-performance vehicles. Initially, offerings in the early 1960s consisted of full-bodied vehicles packed with powerful engines, known as super stock cars. As the 1960s progressed into the 1970s, smaller, lighter cars, known as pony cars, were introduced to satisfy the public’s desire for personalized performance vehicles. As this trend gained momentum in the mid to late 1960s, the production availability of full-bodied performance vehicles began to decline, making them highly sought-after classics in today’s market.

Offered here is a beautiful 1969 Chevrolet Impala SS convertible, renowned for its rarity. In 1969, only 14,415 Impala convertibles were assembled, with just 2,455 being SS 427s. This particular SS 427 boasts 390 factory horsepower and was ordered as a zero-option unit with a three-speed column shift transmission. Research indicates that while a handful of Impala coupes were delivered with the three-speed column shift, this SS convertible is the only known example with a factory-installed three-speed column shift. The car originated in Virginia and remained there through three owners until it was brought to New York in 2020. Upon arrival in New York, the numbers-matching engine had already undergone a rebuild, and the top had been replaced. Its fourth owner, an avid enthusiast, installed a factory-correct power steering assembly for ease of maneuvering and also acquired a specially-made, in-dash tachometer, as they were not originally available for this model. The sale will include a copy of the original title from Virginia and the correct protecto plate, while the correct YZ steel wheels and full hubcaps are also available.

The entire body underwent a respray, showcasing the meticulous work. The respray was completed in the correct Daytona Blue Metallic paint, flawlessly applied over the laser-straight body. All chrome emblems are in like-new condition, and both front and rear bumpers have been re-chromed. The striking chrome 427 callouts encasing the front fender marker lights proudly announce the potent engine within. Chrome rally wheels, fitted with bias-belted red wall period-correct tires, enhance the car’s exterior appeal. The grill and light lenses, along with the body side molding, remain original. The engine compartment is pristine, featuring an upgraded aluminum radiator with electric fans. The correct chrome air cleaner and valve covers, along with the factory exhaust manifolds, are in place. The trunk compartment is clean and spacious, equipped with a correct floor mat and spare tire.

Inside, the black vinyl upholstery seats and pristine carpeting contribute to the interior’s immaculate condition. Tastefully placed woodgrain applique adorns the dashboard, door panels, and steering wheel. The instrument gauge cluster, tachometer, and radio command attention, emphasizing the Impala’s classic high-performance pedigree. Seated behind the wheel of this rare time capsule, one cannot help but feel connected to its heritage. Onlookers will undoubtedly admire its stunning appearance, recognizing it as the last year of the SS Impala convertible and the final year of the iconic 427 powerplant.
