In the mid-1930s, Packard found itself in a tough spot—still building high-quality luxury cars, but struggling to find buyers in the wake of the 1929 market crash. As luxury car sales plummeted, Packard pivoted, reintroducing the Packard Six in 1937 to enter the competitive mid-size family car market. Targeting buyers who might otherwise consider Oldsmobile, DeSoto, or LaSalle, the Six offered distinctive style, reliable engineering, and Packard’s trademark refinement at a more accessible price point.
The beautifully preserved 1937 Packard Six featured here was originally delivered to Jenkins Motor Co. in Cartersville, Georgia. It remained with its original owner until the late 1960s, when it was sold and driven regularly until being parked in the early 1970s. It sat quietly in a shed until 1979, when James B. Wagnon Jr. of Chattanooga, Tennessee purchased and restored it. The restoration was a full body-off effort, with a mix of new components and carefully restored original parts.
Now nearly 50 years since that restoration, this Packard still presents beautifully and has seen only light use over the decades. Recently, the current owner has replaced key components—including the water pump, fuel pump, carburetor—and added brand-new whitewall tires. To ensure dependability, the electrical system was converted to 12 volts for better starting, while voltage to the original instruments and lighting is carefully regulated to 7.8 volts. A discreet digital voltmeter and tachometer have been added at the base of the steering column for easy monitoring.
On the road, this Packard is a joy to drive—cruising effortlessly at over 55 mph. The interior is spacious and elegant, with rear seat room that rivals or exceeds modern luxury sedans. It’s a rolling time capsule from an era when craftsmanship and elegance defined motoring.
They truly don’t build them like this anymore—and that’s part of the charm. Whether it’s for weekend drives or long vintage road trips, this Packard Six is ready to turn heads and transport you to another era.
