The 1970 Trans Am marked the debut of the second-generation Pontiac Firebird, featuring a sleek, fastback-style body and advanced performance features such as the Ram Air III and limited-production Ram Air IV V8 engines, functional aerodynamics, and race-inspired instrumentation. With only 3,196 units produced—just 1,769 of them four-speeds—the 1970 model year (which began in February 1970 as the “1970½” model due to production delays) firmly established the Trans Am’s performance-oriented direction for the next decade and beyond.

PHS documentation with a copy of the original window sticker is included.

This Trans Am Ram Air III retains its numbers-matching engine and transmission and is finished in Polar White with a Black interior. The correct number 12 cylinder heads, correct Quadrajet carburetor, rebuilt distributor, and original “COX” 3.55-geared 12-bolt rear axle remain with the car. Everything works as it should except for the factory clock.

This is a rare and highly desirable car that continues to appreciate in value. The paint presents well with a mirror-like reflection and only minor imperfections. The underside of the car is solid and exceptionally clean, while the engine compartment is highly detailed. The interior also presents very nicely. This is an excellent-running and driving, numbers-matching Trans Am Ram Air III four-speed car.

Key Features and Advancements:

New Body Style
The second-generation Firebird adopted a stylish, fastback body—a major departure from the previous “Coke bottle” design.

Performance Focus
Pontiac prioritized performance with the Trans Am, incorporating functional aerodynamic elements such as a front air dam and fender air extractors, which improved downforce at high speeds.

Engine Options
Two high-performance 400-cubic-inch V8 engines were available: the 345 hp Ram Air III and the exclusive 370 hp Ram Air IV.

Interior and Handling
The interior featured full instrumentation, including a race-car-style tachometer, and was praised for its exceptional handling characteristics for a production vehicle.

Signature Graphics
While the black-and-gold “Bandit” theme came later, early 1970 models showcased subtler Firebird graphics and signature color combinations like Lucerne Blue over Polar White.

Production and Context

Delayed Debut
The new body style was intended for a 1970 launch but was delayed until February 1970, earning the “1970½” designation.

Limited Production
Sales for the inaugural 1970 model year were modest, with only 3,196 units produced.

Precursor to Popularity
The sleek and powerful 1970 Trans Am set the tone for the successful Firebird line, even as the muscle car era faced changing regulations and an evolving automotive market.

The ad header is a little deceptive. If I read the ad correctly this is a RAIII trans am, not a RAIV.
