1964 Chevrolet Corvair Spyder Convertible – Turbocharged 2.3L Inline-6, 4-Speed Manual
The 1964 Corvair Spyder represents a special moment in Chevrolet history: the first year it became its own model rather than just a Monza option package, the introduction of the transverse rear leaf spring for improved handling, and the final year the “Spyder” name would be used. Many enthusiasts consider ’64 to be the best of the early Corvairs.
This example is the real deal—not a clone—with the correct “06” in the VIN and matching data plate to prove its Spyder heritage. It was born Ember Red and remains so today, wearing an older repaint that still presents well. The body is extremely straight with no evidence of rust or patchwork, and the undercarriage has been sanded and painted. The trunk compartment is solid and original, showing no signs of past repairs.
The engine, coded YR, is from a 1962 turbocharged car, while a factory ’64 would have been coded YM. Regardless, it runs strong with its turbocharger in place. A great deal of time and money has been invested in the past year with receipts to show. Recent work includes:
New white soft top
Reproduction seat covers with new foam
New door panels, quarter panels, carpet, and sill plates
Rebuilt carburetor, new fuel pump, and distributor
All new brake lines and cylinders
Chrome fuel lines, battery, tires, pushrod tubes and seals
Fresh tune-up with most parts sourced from Clark’s Corvair Parts
Mechanically, the car starts easily, shifts smoothly, brakes well, steers straight, and the turbo works as it should. Importantly, it’s also free of oil leaks. Still, like many vintage turbo Corvairs, it requires a bit of patience and mechanical know-how. The idle could use fine-tuning, and a few details remain: the dash pad is cracked, the fuel/temp/boost gauges are inoperative, and the AM radio doesn’t power on.
Cosmetically, the older paint could benefit from a cut and polish but remains serviceable for now. Overall, this is a very solid, straight, and authentic Spyder convertible—an ideal candidate to enjoy as-is or take to the next level. With its rarity, strong enthusiast following, and robust parts support, it’s a fun and rewarding classic for the right mechanically inclined owner.
