Pontiac earned its performance reputation with icons like the 1964 GTO, but for many enthusiasts, the pinnacle came with the 1973–1974 SD-455 Trans Am and Firebird Formula. These rare machines were low-compression powerhouses, featuring reinforced blocks with 4-bolt mains, round-port heads, forged steel rods, special aluminum pistons, heavy-duty oiling systems with dry sump provisions, and unique valvetrain and manifold designs. These beasts could outrun even a 454 Corvette of the same era.

This stunning 1974 SD-455 Trans Am, finished in Cameo White with just 43,000 miles, is a prime example of what many consider the “last of the true muscle cars.” Under the shaker hood sits the numbers-matching SD-455 (engine #24N164667), with a factory 8.0:1 compression ratio—raw power that must be felt to be believed.
