1948 Buick Super Estate Wagon “Woodie” – Restored Classic with Vintage Charm
Now available, this beautifully restored 1948 Buick Super Estate Wagon—fondly known as the “Woodie”—is a rare and striking example of postwar American craftsmanship. Featuring VIN 51099595 and registered as DGC9595, this wagon presents in an elegant gray finish with darker hood accents, perfectly paired with patterned gray upholstery for a cohesive and vintage look.
Power comes from a 248ci “Fireball” straight-eight engine mated to a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission, delivering a smooth and authentic driving experience. A single downdraft carburetor, blue-finished intake manifold, and recently replaced exhaust and intake manifold gaskets keep the engine running strong.
Distinctive exterior touches include real wood paneling, a vinyl-covered roof, chrome bumpers with overriders, a hood ornament, vertical-bar “Buick Eight” grille, polished gravel guards, rear fender skirts, dual mirrors, and 15-inch steel wheels with chrome trim rings and Buick-branded hubcaps wrapped in Goodyear Arriva whitewall tires. Despite a previous repaint, the Hercules-built body maintains its original character, with some minor cosmetic blemishes noted—such as small dents, scratches, and a pitted exhaust finisher.
Inside, the cabin features two rows of bench seats upholstered in gray vinyl with patterned cloth inserts, framed by stained-wood trim on the doors, pillars, and headliner. Period-correct features include a Venti-heater, push-button AM radio, Borg electric clock, lap belts, and a windshield-mounted compass. The black steering wheel sports a chrome horn ring and necker knob, while the dashboard hosts a 120-mph speedometer and combo gauges for battery, coolant temp, fuel, and oil. Chrome bezels show some aging, and the five-digit odometer reads 38,000 miles, with approximately 250 miles added since early 2023. True mileage is unknown.
Purchased new in Ohio, this Woodie remained in one family for decades before changing hands in 2023. Restoration efforts began in late 2022 and included a rebuilt generator and master cylinder, rear brake overhaul, and new voltage regulator, condenser, and points.
This Super Estate Wagon rides on an independent front suspension, solid rear axle, and coil springs at all four corners. Braking is handled by hydraulically assisted four-wheel drums, with rebuilt rear brakes for confident stopping.
Accompanied by factory literature, a photo-documented restoration, and a clean Washington title, this well-preserved, lovingly restored Woodie is a rare chance to own a piece of Buick history that’s ready to show and enjoy.
