This 1957 Dodge D100 Sweptside Pickup is a beautifully restored example of Dodge’s first-year entry into the luxury pickup market, showcasing the striking “Forward Look” design of the era. In the early 20th century, trucks were purely utilitarian—designed for work, not comfort. But by the 1950s, American consumers began expecting more, wanting their pickups to serve as both workhorses and stylish personal vehicles. The 1955 Chevrolet Cameo set the tone for this new segment, and others soon followed—Ford with the Ranchero, International Harvester with the Golden Jubilee, and Dodge with the rare and elegant Sweptside.
Introduced in May 1957, the Sweptside was a partially hand-built truck crafted by Dodge’s “Special Equipment Group.” Built on a long-wheelbase ½-ton chassis, it uniquely integrated the rear quarter panels and bumper from Dodge station wagons. While the tailgate and bed appeared standard, they were actually narrowed to fit the Sweptside’s custom rear fenders. The result was a one-of-a-kind truck that turned heads and offered a glimpse of the future, wrapped in Virgil Exner’s aerospace-inspired “Forward Look” styling.
The 1957 model was the only year to feature the forward-thrusting, hooded headlight design, giving it a distinct presence. Dodge produced the Sweptside D100 for just a brief window—May 1957 to January 1959—and estimates suggest fewer than 2,500 were ever made. That makes this ‘57 the second rarest year and a highly sought-after piece for collectors today.
Under the hood, this truck is powered by a 230.2 cubic inch L-head inline-6 engine paired with a single-barrel carburetor, rated at 120 horsepower when new. It’s mated to a push-button automatic transmission, a signature feature of the era. Exhaust exits through a single pipe, delivering a rich, classic tone.
This D100 rides on wide whitewall tires with full Dodge wheel covers, adding a touch of elegance. Other features include a chrome front bumper, turn signals, a driver’s side mirror, and the unmistakable Sweptside bed with a wood plank floor, steel tailgate, and iconic rear quarters.
Finished in a two-tone Bayview Green and Mojave Beige paint scheme, this Sweptside looks just as stunning as it did in the showroom. The interior is equally impressive, featuring a reupholstered beige tweed and vinyl bench seat, matching door panels, headliner, and sun visor. The painted dash and steering wheel maintain a stock appearance. The aluminum-trimmed instrument cluster includes a 110 MPH speedometer, oil pressure, temp, amp, and fuel gauges.
With just 25,349 miles showing on the odometer, this rare and stylish 1957 Dodge Sweptside is an ideal addition to any Mopar collection—or the perfect entry into the world of classic pickups.
