Presenting a truly special piece of Ford history: the 1951 Ford Country Squire Wagon. This model marked the final year Ford built a true “Woodie” wagon and was the first Ford to break the $2,000 mark when new. Crafted with Mahogany plywood panels framed in Birch or Maple, the genuine wood bodywork came from Ford’s Iron Mountain plant in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This example is one of just 29,017 built and still retains its original wood panels.

Originally sold in California, this wagon has also called Arizona and Ohio home. Though we don’t have detailed restoration receipts, we do have a photo album documenting its revival after 36 years in storage. It was treated to a fresh maroon paint job, new front clip, updated drivetrain, and a refurbished interior. The glossy finish pairs beautifully with the original woodwork, and the bright chrome grille, bumper, and “Dagmars” shine up front. The factory hood spine remains, but badges and the hood ornament have been deleted for a cleaner look. Chrome trim surrounds the 2-piece windshield and windows, all of which were replaced with crystal-clear glass. Polished Halibrand wheels wrapped in staggered Cooper tires complete the striking stance.

At the rear, you’ll find a wood-style-wrapped tailgate with a full-size spare and rotating taillights that stay rear-facing even when the tailgate is open—a clever period feature. The tailgate functions as intended, with the top lifting up and the bottom folding flat. Underneath, the undercarriage is exceptionally clean and was undercoated for long-term protection.

Under the hood is a neatly detailed, body-color engine bay housing a Ford 351 Windsor V8, paired with a 3-speed FMX automatic and 8-inch rear end with 2.36:1 gears. Upgrades include an Edelbrock intake, AVS2 carb, finned valve covers, polished air cleaner, Edelbrock cam, and chrome accessory components. Cooling is handled by a Griffin aluminum radiator and electric fan. The exhaust flows through headers and Flowmaster mufflers. Suspension has been modernized with a TCI front end, rack and pinion power steering, tubular A-arms, sway bar, and front disc brakes. Additional updates include Pertronix ignition, American Auto Wiring harness, battery cut-off, and new fuel lines.

Inside, the wagon is appointed in a clean brown and tan color scheme, with room for eight. The original seats have been reupholstered and re-stuffed in rich brown vinyl. With no tools, the rear seat can be removed and the center seat folded flat to create over 9 feet of cargo space. Tan carpeting runs throughout, including matching mats, and the brown vinyl headliner is taut and tidy. Dash and steering wheel details have been artistically painted to resemble wood grain. The banjo-style steering wheel sits on a tilt column, facing a Dakota Digital gauge cluster with integrated digital readouts.

The dash features pull-knobs for fan override, lights, wipers, lighter input (currently used by a Santechi SoundFly aux device), ignition cut-off, and power antenna control. A vintage-style radio from Antique Automobile Radio offers modern functionality and plays cleanly through a dash speaker. Below sits a vintage-style Southern Air unit offering cold A/C and heat.

Additional items include a glovebox stocked with 1950 and 1951 owner’s manuals, remote control for the audio system, compass, cup holder console, and chrome-trimmed pedals. Also included are vintage brochures, a 1979 California registration, a past classified ad, NSRA safety inspection from 2014, stereo instructions, and a car cover.

If you’re seeking a classic Woodie that blends iconic style with updated reliability and drivability, this beautifully preserved 1951 Ford Country Squire delivers. It looks as great in person as it does in the photos—don’t miss your chance to own a piece of true automotive Americana.
