The 1970 BUICK GS 455 Stage 1 was one of 2,465 Stage 1 hardtops produced in 1970. It underwent a meticulous body off-frame rotisserie restoration in 2019. This particular model features a built date code 455 cubic-inch Riviera engine, although it is non-matching in numbers. The correct 3-speed automatic transmission complements the powerful engine.
Notably, this car is listed in the GS Registry and appears to still retain its original metal.
During the restoration process, great care was taken to ensure the body was laser-straight and all body gaps fit precisely. The paintwork, now 5 years old, remains pristine with a glass-like clear coat finish. No cracks, bubbles, or shrinkage were found, showcasing the quality of the paint job. Additionally, the chrome brightwork was meticulously restored, stainless elements were straightened and polished, and all glass, including a new front windshield, remains crystal clear.
The interior of the vehicle received equal attention during the restoration. The entire interior was gutted, Dynamatted under the carpet for soundproofing, and meticulously restored. The dash was disassembled and refurbished, gauges were restored, and modern amenities like a radio with Kicker speakers were added. The upholstery, headliner, visors, carpet, and other interior components were replaced and function flawlessly.
Underneath the car, the chassis underwent a thorough restoration process. The suspension, steering components, brake system, fuel system, and exhaust system were all either rebuilt or replaced to ensure optimal performance. The engine bay and transmission are spotless, reflecting the overall attention to detail in the restoration process.
The Stage 1 package included performance enhancements such as larger valves with heavier springs, a re-jetted carburetor, a high lift cam, upgraded oiling system, high volume fuel pump, HD cooling, and a posi differential. Cars equipped with air conditioning came with 3.42 gears. With only 1680 miles driven since the restoration, this restored GS 455 Stage 1 stands out as a showpiece that would enhance any discerning collector’s collection or impress enthusiasts looking to experience its full potential on the road.

A Stage 1 with a column shift? Mine had the center console, as I thought all Stage-1’s did?
The bench seat/column shift arrangement was standard equipment – bucket seats and a center console were extra-cost options.
Interested in a trade for a 67 Chevy II SS?
Hello,
Yes, I’d certainly consider any car on partial trade for my GS. Please send lots of pictures and details about your car to my direct email, [email protected].
Thanks!
My car is on ACC. Just search for 1967 Chevy II, all the pics are there. The only thing that has changed is there is a new TCI competition 700r4 w/ a 2800 stall, the heads have been changed to a set of gm bowtie phase 2 heads and a match serpentine belt system has been installed. Mine is the Tahoe turquoise one.
The car may be on the registry and the motor date correct, but has this 455 been rebuilt to Stage 1 specs? Are the heads built to Stage 1 specs too?
I don’t have the documentation. I can say from driving the car it performs better than any Stage 1 I’ve driven previously. Unfortunately, the previous owner couldn’t get me the specs. If you’re still interested in the car please assume it isn’t. Thanks
