The 1950 Willys CJ-3A represents the second generation of the iconic civilian Jeep, built between 1949 and 1953. Marketed as the “Universal Jeep,” this model wasn’t just for recreation-it was engineered as a true multipurpose machine for both agricultural and industrial use. Its legacy is even more significant considering it served as the foundation for the military M38 that saw duty during the Korean War.

Under the hood, this CJ-3A carries the battle-tested 134.2ci “Go-Devil” L-head inline-four engine, producing 60 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. Power flows through a Borg-Warner T-90 three-speed manual transmission and a Dana 18 two-speed transfer case, giving it part-time four-wheel-drive capability. Up front, it rides on a Dana 25 axle, while the rear is equipped with the rugged Dana 44-both engineered to withstand off-road punishment.

One of the CJ-3A’s key refinements over its predecessor, the CJ-2A, was improved driver comfort. It featured a one-piece windshield with venting and bottom-mounted wipers, a revised rear wheel well that allowed the driver’s seat to be pushed back for more legroom, and sturdier frames and leaf springs designed to handle heavy-duty attachments. Many were fitted with PTO (Power Take-Off) systems, making them capable farm tools as well as trail machines.

Cosmetically, the CJ-3A is recognizable by its clean one-piece windshield, slightly forward engine mounts, and shortened wheel wells compared to the CJ-2A. It was also offered later in “Farm Jeep” versions with hydraulic lifts and enhanced equipment for serious workhorse duty.

Produced until 1953, when it was replaced by the higher-hooded CJ-3B, the CJ-3A remains one of the most historically significant and collectible civilian Jeeps. With its mix of rugged reliability, mechanical simplicity, and direct ties to military service, this 1950 Willys Jeep is more than just a classic-it’s a piece of American ingenuity and history, ready for both work and play.
