This 1940 Ford Deluxe Street Rod Coupe blends classic styling with serious performance. Power comes from a completely rebuilt and customized 1988 Ford Mustang 5.0L HO engine, cleanly installed in a tidy engine bay with Edelbrock valve covers and chrome air cleaner. The engine has been bored .030 over and features a roller cam block, Keith Black flat-top pistons, resized rods with ARP bolts, and a Comp Cams 280 Magnum hydraulic cam (.512 lift intake/exhaust, 110° lobe separation). It also sports 1965 289 closed-chamber cylinder heads with 54cc chambers, Chevy 1.94” intake and 1.6” exhaust valves, Crane aluminum roller rockers, Comp Cams valve springs, and a Melling high-volume oil pump.
Fuel delivery comes through an Edelbrock Performer intake and 600 CFM Edelbrock carb with electric choke, while custom 1 5/8” shorty headers by MAC handle the exhaust. Cooling is handled by a 1965 Mustang 4-core radiator. The drivetrain includes a rebuilt T-5 Borg Warner 5-speed from a 1984 Mustang, shifted through a Hurst short-throw shifter, and a 10-bolt rear end from a 1984 Monte Carlo with 3.73 gears. Brakes are sourced from a late-’70s Malibu, with refreshed rotors, calipers, wheel cylinders, and shoes.
The all-steel body is straight and solid, with panels that line up well and trim, chrome, and badging in very good condition. Finished in red metallic paint with hand-done pinstriping by “The Bandit” of Connecticut, the exterior shows well, with a few paint imperfections on the trunk lid and roof.
Inside, the cabin features power cloth bucket seats from a later Thunderbird (showing wear), a custom wood steering wheel, older carpeting, and a full VDO gauge cluster. Additional gauges include an under-dash water temp gauge and a Mac Tools tachometer. A trunk release is located behind the seat, and the trunk itself is clean and carpeted, lined with sound-deadening material, and includes a full-size spare with jack.
The undercarriage is clean and fitted with dual exhaust exiting through chrome tips. The car rides on newer Goodyear Wrangler tires mounted on polished chrome American Racing wheels.
Overall, this 1940 Ford Deluxe Street Rod runs strong, handles great, and sounds fantastic. It’s stored in Massachusetts with a clean title in the owner’s name. A like-new 7,000 lb capacity Quality Cargo car trailer, shown in the photos, is available separately or as part of a package deal.
