“This 1966 hardtop showcases the first-generation Mustang’s classic beauty and 6-cylinder simplicity. For the Mustang’s second year of production, Ford made only minor updates to its wildly successful pony car, including a simplified horizontal bar grille, “”three-finger”” side ornamentation and restyled standard wheel covers. Inside, the five-gauge instrument cluster from the previous year’s GT and Interior Décor packages became standard equipment. While the 289 CI small-block V-8 captured the headlines, the majority of 1966 Mustangs were powered by the workhorse 200 CI inline 6-cylinder that produced plenty of torque for peppy acceleration combined with good fuel mileage.

Showing 72,059 miles on the odometer, this burgundy 1966 Ford Mustang hardtop is a nice well-preserved example, with a stock appearing engine bay. Other equipment includes a standard 3-speed transmission, the underdash air conditioning and period-look thin whitewall tires. By midyear 1966, the Mustang had topped one million sales, confirming Lee Iacocca’s hunch that America’s emerging Baby Boomer generation would respond to a sporty yet practical compact car. This 1966 hardtop is the quintessential pony car with long hood, short rear deck styling combined with a formal roofline. Ideal for Saturday night cruises, car shows or Sunday afternoon drives through the countryside, getting behind the steering wheel of this bright red 1966 Mustang will take its new owner back to the fun times of the mid-1960s.
