"For fans of Italian styling and an American powertrain, Cadillac may have answered their wishes during the late 1980s with the Allant. This example is one of 4,670 models made in 1993, the car's final model year, with the Northstar V-8 engine and an assortment of electronic features. This was the former car of CEO Jack Smith when new. Owners manual signed by Smith with inscription ""I killed the car"" meaning he stopped production of the Allante. Current owner had the car since 1999.
Allant bodies were designed and manufactured in Italy by Pininfarina and were shipped 4,600 miles to the U.S. for final assembly with domestically manufactured chassis and engines. Specially equipped Boeing 747s departed from Turin's International Airport with 56 bodies at a time, arriving at Detroit's Coleman A. Young International Airport about three miles northeast of Cadillac's new Hamtramck Assembly plant, known as the ""Allant Air Bridge.""
Finished in Euro Red (code 47), this car's paint and trim are in very good condition from 10 feet away but up close there are minor imperfections visible at close range. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely neat and tidy, the battery appears new and the body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body.
This roadster wears BFGoodrich Potenza RE750 radials, size 225/60R16 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a factory alloy wheel. The tires and wheels are all in good, original order.
Nestled within the engine bay is a transversely mounted Northstar engine (code L37), a DOHC, 32-valve 4.6L V-8 with 10.3:1 compression and variable valve timing (VVT). This motor was part of the Northstar System. Other features included a four-speed electronic automatic transmission (code 4T80-E), Magnasteer variable-assist power steering system, road sensing suspension (RSS), Speed Dependent Damping Control (SD2C) and four-wheel disc brakes with Bosch anti-lock (ABS). Backing up the motor is GM's four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (4T80-E) and a 3.71:1 final drive.
Driver convenience features include electronic climate control, Magnasteer variable-assist power steering system, four-wheel disc brakes with Bosch anti-lock (ABS), power windows, power locks, power sideview mirrors, power seats, power mirrors and headlamp washers.
The car's tan leather interior is in good, original condition. The bucket seats are in very good order with expected wear. he carpet, dual-spoke steering wheel, dashboard and inner door liners, as well as the center console and shift lever are all decent. A/C works but has a slow freon leak. The factory Delco-Bose audio system with CD player is included but inop.
Unlike the Cadillacs of yesteryear, the Allant utilizes a modern, road-hugging suspension design. The front featured struts located by one lateral link and one trailing link, coil springs, electronically controlled shocks and an anti-roll bar. This system, called Speed Dependent Damping Control, debuted on the 1989 models and worked by firming up the suspension at 25 mph and again at 60 mph. The firmest setting also was used when starting from a standstill until five mph. Also introduced in 1989 was a variable-assist steering system. The rear suspension was also independent, and incorporated unequal-length control arms, a toe-control link, fiberglass transverse leaf spring, electronically controlled shocks and an anti-roll bar.
Introduced in early 1992 for the 1993 model year, Allant was scaled down to just one model this year. The removable 60.5-pound aluminum hardtop was now a separate option, as well as the LCD digital instrument cluster in place of the standard analog instruments. A pearlcoat paint option (in Flax or Canyon Yellow, with Hawaiian Orchid added midyear) was available. Also optional were chrome squeeze-cast aluminum wheels. For its final model year, Allant received the 4.6 L Northstar DOHC V-8 engine. It was rated at 295 horsepower at 5,600 rpm. Torque output was 290 ft?lbs at 4400 rpm. A new unequal-length control arm rear suspension, shared with the Seville and Eldorado, was also introduced that year. Also new for the small Cadillacs was Road Sensing Suspension, an active damper management system, and revised disc brakes. The 1993 model used GM's Delco ""Premium Symphony Sound System"". Other changes for the Allant included a revised variable-assist power steering rack, deeper front spoiler, and single-piece side windows, which did away with the stationary forward vent window.
