"The Ford Mustang launched its 3rd generation Fox-platform in 1979 with a longer wheelbase, providing a larger 4-passenger cabin, and more ample space in the engine and trunk compartments. Offered originally with several engine options, but only in notchback and fastback variants, as the convertible would not return to production until 1983, having been absent from order forms for over 9 years. In fact, even the GT model series would make a comeback in 1982 having been dropped for the Mach I and various Cobra monikers since 1969. Early Mustang fox body cars have a distinct front end with quad, rectangular headlights that are inset to the body, with a sharp angle of the overall fascia. The grill styles changed year to year, with a prominent Ford Blue Oval replacing the Mustang emblem at the front in 1983. And electronic fuel-injection became standard for V6 and V8 engines in 1986 for the first time.
The GT Equipment package in 1986 came with a host of standard features to include a 5.0L High-Output V8 engine making 200 horsepower and 285 lb. ft. of torque, a performance handling suspension, articulated sport seats, 15x7"" cast aluminum 10-hole ""phone dial"" wheels with VR-rated performance tires, Traction-Lok 8.8"" rear axle with 2.73 gearing, quick-ratio power steering, heavy duty battery, and standard 5-speed overdrive manual transmission! Additional no-charge features included all tinted window glass, tilt steering column, rear luggage rack, center console with electronic digital clock & diagnostic warning module, and remote-control fuel door opener.
Offered here is a garage kept and incredibly survived 1986 Ford Mustang GT Convertible finished in its factory applied, all original Dark Grey Metallic exterior paint over perfectly preserved, two-tone Charcoal & Grey cloth sport seat interior. It retains its factory Black vinyl power folding convertible top with glass back window and comes further equipped with optional power windows & locks, cruise control, air conditioning, premium sound system with AM/FM/Cassette/EQ audio unit, and convenience lighting package.
Showing just 10,499 pampered miles on the odometer, we would wager you will not find a better kept specimen anywhere in the country! Having just one owner from new, being purchased from Roberts Ford on December 23rd, 1985, it could not have been better cared for in a true preservation, time capsule effort. Never abused, never smoked in, and never driven in inclement weather. Only garaged and enjoyed sparingly, kept on a battery tender, cleaned and serviced as necessary. The meticulous nature of his stewardship shows further with the documentation and components included with the sale. This includes the factory build sheet, original window sticker, Ford warranty ID plate, copy of original factory MSO, copy of original Illinois title dated upon registration in December 1985, all original owner's manuals, Marchal fog light covers, 1986 Mustang showroom brochure, official Ford car cover still in the box, convertible boot cover with storage bag, Roberts Ford dealership license plate surround & matching keychain, temporary Illinois driveaway tag, and all insurance and service records from new!
In an effort to preserve the factory wheels and tires, they were removed and stored after being driven approximately 8,000 miles. In their place, a newer 1987 set of cast aluminum 5-spoke Mustang GT wheels were installed after being color-matching to the exterior paint. Those wheels will be included with the sale along with new center caps in FOMOCO boxes(4), as well as a few new service parts also in factory boxes. We would also like to note that everything on the car is in full and complete working order. This includes the a/c, clock, radio, cruise control, windows/locks, horn, wipers, lights, etc. Just a spectacular Mustang GT Convertible with a highly desired 5-speed manual transmission and exceptionally low mileage! Look far and wide, you won't find another like this one! Act quickly Mustang fans! You won't regret adding this one to your garage!
