1982 Datsun 280ZX
Although the old guard won't enjoy hearing it, Japanese cars are becoming collectable. We're already seeing spikes in prices of cars like the Datsun 2000 roadster, the Toyota 2000GT, and the early Mazda Cosmo, so there's no sense in fighting it. The Datsun/Nissan Z-car now has a history that's nearly as old as some of our beloved American iron such as the Camaro, Firebird, and Dodge Challenger. And for a generation that grew up in the 70s, the Nissan 280ZX was something we eagerly read about in the pages of our favorite car magazines.
The American iron muscle had plenty of power which is indisputable, but Datsun, (soon to be Nissan), with their Z series, had decent power for their size, but has a one up on the Americans..handling! This was nowhere more evident in the class ranks of the SCCA, where the Z's were in the same class as the ponies. Down the straight it was the Americans, however they were quickly caught in the curves and out handled which made for interesting racing on all configurations of tracks. And now for consignment we give you this 1982 version of the Datsun 280ZX with super low 26,953 original miles!...read on!
Exterior
A super shiny thunder black paint job adorns this sports car from Japan. A nicely curved front spoiler rotates around to meet the front quarters which frame 14-inch Mangels wheels sporting shiny chromed dish edges and 5 spokes of alloy wheels. In front deep inset headlights flank the long hood which from side view almost looks like it's been pinched to a point at the bumper. We see a dual gold decal trim spear running the length of the car and highlighting the center line. To keep that look going the glass is trimmed with stainless steel which has a wide vented trimming on the b pillar just prior to the triangulated sloping rear side glass. A long sloping rear top glass and hatchback forms another blunted point on the rear of the car and it gives it a look of the 80's European supercars, in particular I see some Maserati inspiration. On the back, some snappy orange over red tail lights within a black horizontal grid bezel, a black bumper top with some chrome on its bottom runs straight across the back roll pan. More shine for the exhaust tip which is a single exit on the passengers side just below that bumper. Gold badging, and that look makes this car much like a black and gold highlighted bottle of lightning.
Interior
A swing of the door to leap inside to an inviting very good condition interior, reveals 2 leather tan colored covered bucket seats all original and in great condition. These chairs have been protectively covered with fuzzy gray sheepskins on the tops since new and are nicely fitted. Comfortably seated, one can reach out to the factory brown steering wheel, gearshift and center console glovebox between the seats. We can gaze upon the clean original dash which is all made up of tan molded textured plastic framing a black sweep instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. The dash display is peppered with some digital lights and warning readouts, which adds a techno look when turning the key. In the center is a trio of molded circles which have gauges embedded within and are aimed at the driver for easy glancing to see what's up. Also noted in dash center, are temp sliders and a panel just for the stereo which includes an AM/FM/Cassette player and aluminum looking knobs and buttons. On the convenience side are power windows, remote controlled mirrors, cruise control, and intermittent wipers, all conveniences not often seen in an 80's sporty automobile. Gold carpeting nice and clean covers all the floors, and in back a large storage area under that large flat greenhouse gate glass. The original factory tan carpeted mats are stored here.
Drivetrain
Flipping the long, long hood forward reveals an original unrestored very clean and corrosion free engine bay. Shoehorned into this space is the L28E inline 2.8 Liter 6 cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection that produces 145hp. Bolted on back is a T5 5-speed manual transmission that not only provides great acceleration in lower gears, but great gas mileage in overdrive. This works with a 3.90 rear axle to smoke the tires.
Undercarriage
Shades of some patina show here with little to no surface rust, and aluminum floor pan coverings for some aero slipperiness. A solid unibody frame, good mechanicals, and overall very clean low mileage condition. All independent suspension is seen as well as power disc brakes on all 4 corners.
Drive Ability
No complaints from this car as it fired right up and ran beautifully. All functions were in working order, and it presents nicely to the eye for the interior and exterior. Exhaust sound relates to the impending storm that is forming and this car is looking for a challenger, possibly even some American Pony Muscle. I did notice the AC is cool but not super cold.
Prior to Nissan-this Datsun 280ZX BY NISSAN..has bells and whistles and is a very low mileage example which is extremely clean. It is also a slightly larger car, fuel injected, and has overdrive. Overall this is a very nice car. An all original car for consignment here at Classic Auto Mall will have you tearing down the road, making lots of zzzzzzzzz's!
