I went to inspect this 1972 Mach1 north of Seattle in the fall of 2018. The owner had invested a lot of time and money trying to reach his goal to fully restore this local Mustang Mach1 (stored for years) back to original. Unfortunately he could no longer afford to finish a lot of details and improvements so he had to sell it. After spending the day driving and inspecting it we bought it and he delivered it in an enclosed trailer to our ranch in north Idaho. We had been on the hunt over many months for a fall/winter and spring (Mustang) project and this was a perfect find for me to pass the winter working on in my personal auto shop here. This has been one of numerous restorations I have done over the years.
This matching numbers Mach1 (documented) went through a down to the metal rotisserie restoration (documented) and repairs in 2016-17. We still have the original window sticker and more. The number matching 351C was also rebuilt 0.30 over (documented). I had the automatic FMX fully rebuilt including a new 2,000 rpm stall converter and a shift kit installed (documented). The drive shaft was then re-balanced with new u-joints. The 351C has now been upgraded (all new) with an Edelbrock dual plane aluminum intake, Holley 600 4-barrel carb (jetted), manual choke, ceramic headers, updated electronic ignition, ignition coil, four row radiator, flex fan and an electric cooling fan boost if needed. Chrome upgrades were added like the round air cleaner, Edelbrock valve covers, custom breather vent, chrome master cylinder cover along with high end red custom cut ignition wires. All new front wheel bearings and seals were installed. A new brake booster and master cylinder was installed along with front brake calipers and pads. Rear brakes had been gone through. Front and rear gas shocks are new along with new front coil springs and rear leaf springs. Steering components are either new or like new. It is fully four-way aligned to specs. To improve road handling I upgraded to a new 1-1/8 front sway bar and installed a new 3/4 inch rear sway bar as they did not come with one. We installed a Monte Carlo bar to further support handling. With all the new and improved parts this Mustang still looks stock but now handles much better than when new and is more fun to drive. New H4 Halogen headlights with H.D. relays and hidden LED high beam driving lights make night driving safer. All the exterior lighting works correctly.
After the Rotisserie Project was completed the original Brilliant Red paint code was used in a total repaint. The entire correct Mach1 package was used and the old front painted urethane bumper, painted fender trims and painted hood trim were replaced with new chrome parts. We believe it looks much better this way. The interior has all new seat springs, foam and correct seat covers. The fold down rear sport seat in fully rebuilt, looks really sharp and functions correctly. New black carpet, door panels and head liner were installed. The dash has a refaced and rebuilt tachometer and speedometer. I had the original clock upgraded to quartz movement. Blue LED dash lighting was installed and all gauges work correctly. It has a new dash pad, custom wood steering wheel and the OEM radio was left in place while a new CD/radio was installed in the glove box. We have a long list of additional work and parts (documented) into this Mustang Mach1 by either us or previously by the gentleman we purchased it from which goes well beyond this posting.
This number matching Mach1 Beautiful Classic Car has been a project over three years and now is being driven a bit around 550 miles on (sunny dry days only) and shown at many regional classic car show events. In these events it inconstantly wins first or second place awards and gets endless thumbs up on the road. It also achieved "BEST OF SHOW" in a two day annual major 400 car, Silverwood Coaster Classic Car event 8/31/2019.
Our original Mach1 has been another fun project for us to experience and it is now time to pass it on to a new owner so we can do it again. It is also the rule here is sell one before starting another project. We are looking for a RESTOMOD Mustang 1967-1970 as our final project to work with. We would consider a trade as part of a deal if both parties were happy with that. This Mach1 is set up to start and run and fully enjoy as a reliable Classic Muscle Car. It is certainly very performance oriented and is true eye candy when driven or shown. It is now available to be driven to a new home or it can be shipped. Mustang was purchased out of long storage in 2015 by the previous owner, First sold by Korum Ford, 812 N.
