"1970 Chevrolet Chevelle LS5 SS454
The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks good no matter how it's built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired. That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body. And when you factor in this ride's big block drivetrain, original interior and first rate, all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an incredible muscle car!
For consignment, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS in LS5 trim. This is a numbers matching car with its Protecto-Plate, window sticker, originalinterior, mostly original paint and oh did I mention the 454 cubes of kick ass big block power residing under the functionalcowl induction hood? Purchased by our consignor as a 1 family owned car with the paperwork to back it up. Prepare yourself for a trip back in time, this title verified 85,723 actual mile Chevelle is about as close as you can get to the showroom floor in 1970. Buckle up, it's gonna be a fast ride!
Exterior
For 1970, the face-lifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634K units. Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it also solidified the nameplate as part of Chevy's oft romanticized 'golden era'. At the front of this coupe, a split grille hangs a prominent ""SS"" emblem in the horizontal chromed mid grille bar. Stainless-trimmed dual headlights are flanking on either side and are within white panels. Below is a nice and shiny bumper with factory bumper guards. Opposite that bumper, a domed Super Sport dual black painted wide striped hood leads the eye to factory glass that's seated in original stainless frames. At the base of those frames, chrome door handles, a chrome driver's mirror and white-tinged ""SS454"" badges complement 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels. And at the back of the car, a second original shiny bumper, with guards, hangs a standard Super Sport inlay. All bathed in the majority of factory Classic White with wide black stripes racing up the middle of the hood and trunk lid. The only confirmed paint work is on the passenger's fender which was replaced and repainted due some dents and dings. The finish itself is showing some cracking and checking, but one must be up close and personal to see these flaws.
Interior
Its correct combination of bench and bucket seats that are firm to the touch, encased in the original red vinyl, original belts, and high backs. These seats remain factory fresh in both presentationand supple feel, and yes these are the originals! In front of those seats, a straight rally dash frames a trio of gauges inset into a black textured dash front. Below that dash, the original red carpet floats an original center console that has a shifter that would make an airline pilot proud, and this is inside a correct console. Factory red vinyl floor mats with the Chevrolet bowtie logo are protecting the carpeting. At the sides of that carpet, door panels center classy stainless trim and requisite ""SS"" emblems on bright handles and supple, comfortable armrests. In front of the driver the steering wheel laps a black column. And behind the passengers, the car's fully original trunk is finished with the factory spatter paint, jack, and full-size spare tire all floating on the original vinyl trunk liner. The headliner is nice and tight and is also red, and is where the shoulder belts hang and the working dome light resides.
Drivetrain
Gaze into the freshly detailed satin black engine bay and you'll find the numbers matching 454ci V8, (casting # 3963512 and stamping T0908CRQ), all bedecked in orange/red GM paint. That block balances a polished and decaled cowl induction open air cleaner on top of the correct Rochester 4-bbl carburetor and intake manifold. This feeds Chevrolet heads that are topped by chromed valve covers. The numbers matching TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is strapped to the rear of the mill, and it pushes power rearward to a correct and Protecto-Plate matching CRV stamped 12-bolt 3.31 Positraction equipped rear axle.
Undercarriage
Some spotty surface rust is noted on the usual suspects but no invasive rust is present, just factory steel in a patinaed black finish. Independent coil springs upfront and a 4link with coil springs are on for the suspension, and power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear. Neary new dual exhaust is on with a pair of Garnder mufflers are on and making their way rearward.
Drive-Ability
Our muscle car aficionado snapped up this test drive, and when he returned he reported nice acceleration, smooth shifting, good cornering and all the functions were working swimmingly. Overall, it was a very happy motoring and even the factory AM/FM/8 track stereo was working as it should.
1970's muscle alway brings smiles to faces, and this one with a known history and gobs of documentation has everyone looking at it smiling. A fresh detailing, and some work over the time that our consignor has owned it, along with a paper trail of receipts etc, show the history of this car. Eat 'em up!
