If you seek a sleeper classic roadster that has a factory surprise under the hood, consider this MG MGC Roadster. The MGC is a grand tourer, despite looking identical to the previous MGB. With upgraded 6 cylinder engine and triple carb set up.
With its revised front suspension and heavier engine, the MGC is not a canyon or corner carver just as the MGB is not meant to be comfy on long trips.
Freshly cleaned and polished, this car shows fantastic in the sunshine. The paint, done in Mineral Blue, and trim, are in overall excellent order. This car is one of approximately 4,200 units exported to the United States between 1967 and 1969.
The bodywork is straight and solid, the cargo area is in very good order and the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. The car has a contrasting light blue manually folding canvas top that while not original, looks great against the exterior hue. The car retains its original black boot cover.
This droptop rolls on 165/80R15 tires and each one is mounted to a factory wire wheel. There is a full-size spare tire with another wire wheel in the trunk. The spare wheel is in satisfactory order while the other four are in very good order, as are the four tires that touch the pavement. The front tires need four pounds more air than the back tires, partially due to the wheel weights and to keep up with the nose-heavy nature of the car's handling with a six-cylinder engine.
The previous owner made a lot of upgrades and added new parts to this car a battery in 2023, three new wiper blades, a fuel pump, rebuilt master cylinder, bled and cured braking system, front disc brakes, electrical system, revamped choke, new rear differential, valve lifters, custom head gasket, planed and shaved engine head.
Under the bulging hood is a 2.9L straight six-cylinder engine with three carburetors. Backing this motor is a Borg-Warner 35 three-speed automatic transmission, a rare find in a MG. Other convenience features include an AM radio and a cigarette lighter.
Inside, you'll find the original black interior. The bucket seats are in very good order while the matching carpet is immaculate. A three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver while the black dashboard and inner door liners are in excellent order. A floor-mounted automatic shifter and the aforementioned AM radio complete the inside.
The MGC was a 2,912 cc, straight-six version of the MGB sold from 1967 and produced until August 1969 with some sales running on into 1970.
In the triple SU carburetor form used in the MGC the engine produced 145 bhp at 5,250 rpm. The body shell needed considerable revisions around the engine bay and to the floor pan but externally the only differences were a distinctive bonnet bulge to accommodate the relocated radiator and a teardrop for carburetor clearance. It had different brakes from the MGB, 15-inch wheels with Pirelli Cinturato 165HR15 tires, a lower geared rack-and-pinion and special torsion bar suspension with telescopic dampers.
Like the MGB, it was available as a coup (GT) and roadster. An overdrive gearbox or three-speed automatic gearbox were available as options. The car was capable of 120 mph and a 060 mph time of 10.0 seconds.
Convertible competition to this MG in 1969 includes Datsun's 2000 and Porsche's 911 Targa. The previous owner said this is a good driver; he used it to buy ice cream and local car shows. Now, it is ready for its next owner. If you're looking for a classic grand tourer with a lot of upgrades, you should not let this one pass you by. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check out this gorgeous two-seater!
